January 30, 2023

By LACC

Good Monday morning,

This has been a difficult time for many of us due to the recent local and national acts of horrific violence. We are here to support our students, faculty, staff and administrators as we all process these devastating tragedies.  We share your pain, frustration, sadness, and anger in continuing to witness mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay and the deaths of Tyre Nichols, Darryl Tyree Williams, and Keenan Anderson as a result of police violence and brutality. We will have a candlelight vigil for those who have been killed violently tomorrow at 1pm outside the Student Union Amphitheater.

LACC is committed to better understanding how racism and violence can impact our community and to ensuring that we do everything we can to eliminate its impact for the future of our students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community. We continue to work towards the common goal of social justice and racial equality. As many of you process this, please know that we are here for you in dealing with these tragic emotional events. If you are having challenges and feel that you need support, please do not hesitate to contact someone. Here are resources – Joseph J. Exnowski, phone 323.953.4000; email @email; the LACCD Employee Assistance Plan at 800.581.1485; the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health at 800.854.7771. Students can also contact the Health & Wellness Center at 323.953.4000, ext. 2485.

Thank you all for attending Friday’s classified staff retreat. It was good to see everyone in person again. We got great work done and we have wonderful ideas as we go forward with our initiatives to make LACC the best community college in the country.

We had almost 100 staff and faculty volunteer at our Enrollment Fair on Saturday. It was very successful. We estimate that almost 1,000 people were here on Saturday to get information about our programs, see a counselor, enroll for classes, and meet those of you who were here for the event. We hope to see an increase in enrollment this week as a result of the event. I missed it because I have been up in Sacramento for the Annual Legislative Conference since Saturday. I am back on campus tomorrow.

Thursday is our Faculty Symposium. Chancellor Rodriguez will be here on Thursday, February 2 at 8:30am to update the college community on the presidential search. Here is the Zoom link for you to join in on Chancellor Rodriguez’ Town Hall on Thursday morning: Town Hall: LACC College President Search Updates.

We have a lot of exciting happenings at LACC over the next few weeks, including our Lunar New Year Celebration this Wednesday, February 1 at 12noon. I hope you can join us. We also have Beat the Rush this week and Welcome Week events the first week of class.

Registration is in full swing for spring classes. Students can visit the Welcome Center for assistance and find classes at: https://www.lacitycollege.edu/academics/class-schedules. Please be sure to reach out to your students to make sure they register for spring classes.
