ESL Milestone Certificates
ESL Milestone Certificates of Achievement
The English & ESL Department offers two ESL Milestone Certificates of Achievement. These certificates are designed to prepare English language learners for the rigor of academic coursework as they embark on programs of study leading to associate degrees, transfer to universities and graduate programs, and professional careers.

Language Arts, Oral Communication
Students completing the ESL Milestone – Language Arts, Oral Communication Certificate of Achievement have demonstrated the successful acquisition of academic English listening and speaking skills at an advanced, post-secondary level.
Program Requirements
Requirements for the ESL Milestone – Language Arts, Oral Communication Certificate of Achievement may be met by completing 21-22 units of required courses with a grade of “C” or better:
- Core E.S.L. (15 units): E.S.L. 6A, E.S.L. 6C, and E.S.L. 8
- Core Transfer-Level English (3-4 units): E.S.L. 110, ENGLISH 101, or ENGLISH 101Z
- Core Communication Studies (3 units): COMM 101, COMM 111, or COMM 121
Language Arts, Written Communication
Students completing the ESL Milestone – Language Arts, Written Communication Certificate of Achievement have demonstrated the successful acquisition of English writing skills at an advanced, post-secondary level.
Program Requirements
Requirements for the ESL Milestone – Language Arts, Written Communication Certificate of Achievement may be met by completing 18-19 units of required courses with a grade of “C” or better.
- Core E.S.L. (12 units): E.S.L. 006A and E.S.L. 8
- Core Transfer-Level English (3-4 units): E.S.L. 110, ENGLISH 101, or ENGLISH 101Z
- Core English (3 units): ENGLISH 102 or ENGLISH 103
