Spring 2019 - Scholarship Award Opportunities
The English/ESL Department is pleased to announce that students can now apply for our 2019 Scholarship Awards!
Students who meet the necessary qualifications are encouraged to apply!
Specific criteria and instructions for each scholarship are included for each Scholarship Award Application. Use the red links below each scholarship description to download the corresponding application form. Download the Scholarship Application for which you would like to apply, print it out, and fill in by hand.
The completed Scholarship Application deadline for Spring 2019 is Thursday, April 25th at 3 pm. You may turn in your application to the English/ESL Department at the front desk in room JH 301.
Make sure that you meet all the criteria for the scholarship for which you are applying.
All applicants must attach a copy of their unoffical transcripts to their application.
Each application also requires that students complete a typed essay in response to a particular writing question which appears at the end of the application form. This essay must also be attached to your application form along with your unofficial transcripts.
Applicants who are chosen will need to make themselves available on Friday, May 10th, at which time we will conduct in-person interviews.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend our Annual Awards Ceremony/Celebration on Thursday evening, beginning at 6 pm on May 23rd, which will take place in the Student Union on the third floor. At this time, awards will be presented to all of the scholarship recipients.
Below is a list of the scholarships available now:
The Agnes Partin Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship award of $400 will be given to an outstanding student who plans to pursue a career related to the field of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to pursue a career in teaching English.
- Be taking or have taken English 101.
- Have a 3.4 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
- Plan to transfer.
- Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.
The Charles Davis Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship award of $400 will be given to an outstanding student of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to pursue a literary career.
- Be taking or have taken English 101.
- Have a 3.3 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
- Plan to transfer.
- Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.
The Kathy Chatterton Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship award of $400 will be given to an outstanding student of ESL who is currently enrolled in either ESL Level 6 or 8.
- Be recommended by an ESL faculty member.
- Plan to graduate from LACC or transfer to a four-year college or university.
- Plan to enter a career or profession.
- Have completed at least 12 units of ESL.
- Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units of either ESL Level 6 or 8.
The Miriam Kirshenbaum Cassyd Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship award of $400 will be given to an outstanding female student of English who plans to pursue a career related to social justice and helping the underprivileged. All who meet the following criteria are invited to apply.
- Be taking or have taken English 97 or above.
- Have a 3.0 GPA with a minimum 12 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
- Preference will be given to students who plan to transfer, but is not required.
- Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.
Miriam Kirshenbaum Cassyd Memorial Scholarship info and application
The Robert Rangel Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship award of $400 will be given to an outstanding student of ESL who is currently enrolled in either ESL Level 4 or 5.
- Be recommended by an ESL faculty member.
- Have completed at least 6 units of ESL.
- Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units of either ESL Level 4 or 5.
The Ronald Emmons Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship award of $400 will be given to an outstanding student of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to African-American males who intend to major in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing.
- Be taking or have taken English 101.
- Have a 3.0 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
- Plan to transfer.
- Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.
The Mary Hsia Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship award of $400 will be given to an outstanding ESL student who is currently enrolled in either ESL Level 2 or 3.
- Be recommended by an ESL faculty member.
- Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units of either ESL 2 or 3.
The G. Jay Kelly Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship award of $400 will be given to an outstanding student of English Literature. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to major in English, with the intention of a writing or English teaching career.
- Be taking or have taken English 102 or any other second-year literature course.
- Have a 3.4 GPA with a minimum of 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
- Plan to transfer.
- Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.
