Frequently Asked Questions

I want to take an online class. What do I do?

Students may enroll in online classes through the Student Information System anytime after their registration appointment date until the first day of the semester, or the class limit is reached. Once the semester begins or if a class is full, instructors may, at their discretion, add a limited number of additional students by providing them with a permission number. The individual instructor must be contacted to determine if they are accepting add requests. Using your official, LACC-assigned student email address at (username)@student.laccd.edu, state your request to add the course, including the course title and section number. Please also include your complete, official name and student ID number in all add requests.

  • Make certain that you list a correct email address in your student profile in the LACCD Student Information System.
  • Look for email messages from the instructor of your online course. These messages will be sent to your official, LACC-assigned student email address at (username)@student.laccd.edu.
  • Read the Schedule of Classes for information about instructor contact and in-person meetings. It is your responsibility to attend mandatory orientation meetings. You may be dropped for non-attendance.
  • When you register for a class you will be added automatically to the canvas shell. However, many instructors will not publish their shells until the first day of class, so it may not appear on your Canvas dashboard until the semester/session starts.
    • Note: It can take up to 24 hours after you add a class for your account to become active in Canvas.
  • If you do not hear from your instructor within the first two days of the beginning of the term and you do not see the course in your Canvas dashboard, send them an email. In your email subject line state your course name and section number, include your complete, official name, and student ID in the body of your message. Consult the LACC Employee Directory for appropriate email addresses.

Can Out-of-State students take online classes at LACC?

Note: Effective July 1, 2015, the United States Department of Education requires that the Los Angeles Community College District/colleges obtain approval from each out-of-state student’s state of residency before he/she may enroll in an online course. Out-of-State students not residing in California, and for which the College does not have a current State Authorization Agreement, will be excluded. Active military personnel are exempt.
