Outstanding Programs

LACC offers over 100 program certificates and degrees from 20 different departments. Notable programs include:

Business Administration

• Ranked among the top 20% of college and university Business programs
• Full-time fully online AA transfer degree can be earned in 22 months

Chemistry & Earth Sciences

• The Chemistry department has started collaboration with UT San Antonio and UCLA to study Silver Lipoate Clusters focused on developing synthetic methodologies that enable the self-assembly of the silver clusters
• Students that have completed their chemistry classes at LACC are eligible to apply and participate in this publishable and cutting edge research

Child & Family Studies/Dietetics

• Child Development courses allow students higher levels of employment and certification in early childhood programs or other related fields in early care and education
• Dietetics - nutrition and food preparation for both Dietetic Service Supervisors and Dietary Managers; provides course and fieldwork and hands-on experiences in therapeutic and clinical nutrition, food service management and food production

Cinema & Television

• The department has received the generous support of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to maintain state-of-the-art studios, such as the “Dick Clark Television Studio”, laboratories, and classrooms to provide students with the technical skills and creative guidance to prepare them for professions in the entertainment industry

Communication Studies

• The program promotes the effective practice of human communication with foundational coursework in communication theory, practical exploration, and skills development
• The department proudly offers the opportunity for students to compete on a nationally recognized Forensics Speech and Debate Team.
• The department also offers the opportunity for students to improve their Standard American English speaking skills at our own speech clinic

Dental Technology

• The department operates under well-equipped and highly specialized facilities, where instructors are able to demonstrate, instruct, and train students in basic and advanced dental technologies, such as Digital Dentistry, the computerized design (CAD) and fabrication (CAM) of the dental prosthesis and implant prosthodontics
• The department motto is: “Dental Technology is the intersection of science, technology and art, adhering together to create beautiful smiles.”

English & ESL

• Classes are supplemented with lectures by renowned scholars and authors by adopting the LACC Book Program selections each year. Students have a chance to meet the authors and/or scholars of the works they read in their courses.
• The department also encourages all students to engage in writing by holding a writing contest every spring semester. It is open campus-wide to students in any major and at different language skills levels

Kinesiology/Health/Dance

• Involves the study of physical activity and its impact on health, society, and quality of life
• Careers in Kinesiology include: Sports Medicine, Coaching, Teaching, Wellness, Personal Training, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Biomechanics, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Ergonomics, Corporate Fitness, Sports Management, Athletic Administration, Sports Broadcasting, Exercise Physiology, Sports Psychology and Sports Officiating

Law/Administration of Justice

• The American Bar Association (ABA) approved Paralegal Studies program provides students who are interested in a career as an employee in a law office or courthouse the opportunity to assist in the performance of legal services in civil and criminal matters
• The Pathway to Law School curriculum is designed for students who aspire to law school. The Pathway curriculum is made up of eight, multidisciplinary courses to prepare students academically for success in law school
• The Administration of Justice program is a "hands-on" forensic-oriented program that teaches students the fundamental concepts and tasks of law enforcement and concentrates on investigative skills

Life Sciences

• The department provides all students the opportunity to explore the science of life and to complete general education requirements in the Natural Sciences and prepare students for transfer to four-year programs in the biological sciences and allied health programs
• Life Sciences disciplines include: Anatomy, Biology, Physiology, Microbiology, Genetics, Zoology, and Botany

Mathematics & Computer Science

• Premier Mathematics program awarded among the top five teams nationally for the past 14 years. LACC had the #1 team in 2019 – its fifth time (out of approximately 200 schools) in 14 years.
• Students successfully transfer to prestigious university programs including UCLA, UC Berkley and other UCs, USC and California Institute of Technology, and Cal State Universities

Modern Languages

• The department delivers comprehensive, quality training in languages and cultures in order to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills for transfer to a university
• Ten languages are taught: ASL, Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish

Music

• The Music department, located in the Herb Alpert Music Center, has state-of-the-art equipment and premier programs due to the generous support of the Herb Alpert Foundation
• The LACC Applied Music program provides private lessons to committed music students who are planning to transfer to a four-year institution as music majors. This culminates in a jury examination in front of a faculty jury panel, the type of process a student will face in entrance examinations to four-year schools
• Full program scholarships are available to students who qualify

Nursing

• Clinical experiences will include the opportunity for students to participate in nursing care and treatments of clients in hospitals and other health care facilities
• The program is designed to be completed in four semesters
• LACC Nursing graduates achieved a 100% pass rate on the licensing exam this year

Physics/Engineering

• Prepares engineers and technicians in the fields of Physics, Engineering, and Astronomy
• The Consortium for Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site that offers research and training opportunities for motivated students selected from a consortium of Los Angeles-area community colleges. The program offers students paid internships at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA in the areas of astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, and space exploration.
• Projects involve observations, image processing, data analysis, scientific programming, instrumentation development, or space missions engineering. Most projects are related to future or ongoing JPL missions

Psychology

• The Human Services curriculum, offered by the Department of Psychology, is a lower-division two-year course of study designed to train a student in one of two options: Human Services Generalist or Drug/Alcohol Studies
• The program also introduces subjects to students who are planning four-year degrees in majors such as Psychology, Human Services, Behavioral Science, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Health Science, Alcohol and Substance Abuse

Radiologic Technology

• This program prepares graduates to work as a Radiologic Technologist in the medical field by passing the licensing exam for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist Examination (ARRT)
• The Radiographer must be proficient in the knowledge of radiographic exposure, anatomy, patient positioning, the operation of specialized equipment, and the care and management of the patient and with the rapid expansion of medical diagnostic imaging has greatly increased the diversity and utility of medical diagnosis
• The LACC Radiologic Technology Program has an articulation agreement with CSUN
• Licensing exam 5-year average passing = 88%; job placement 5-year average = 88%

Social Sciences

• The program facilitates the development of students from all walks of life so that they may know the true nature of man's place on earth, with an emphasis toward transdisciplinarity as a means to address the universal nature of knowledge acquisition
• Instruction occurs across the social sciences, with our major strengths in African-American studies, Chicano studies, Asian-American studies, Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, and Sociology

Theater Arts

• National award winning programs in acting and costume design
• Three programs: acting, costuming, technical theatre/entertainment technology
  • Actors Training - This is a boot camp for theater professionals. You will be stretched, stressed, and challenged far beyond what you ever thought yourself capable
  • Costume Design - For film and video costume styling; script breakdowns, character breakdowns; sketching, swatching, character boards, traditional and computer illustration techniques, developing your portfolio, and production meetings; costume history, research, resourcing, shopping, and budgeting; pattern drafting and draping, measurements, fabric selection, cutting, fitting, and construction; selecting and creating accessories; costume dyeing, painting, and batiking; wardrobe skills for theatre, film, and video: pulling a show, navigating costume storage, shop organization, and costume maintenance; theatre discipline and procedures, dress rehearsals, managing a crew, and striking; character makeup, hair & wigs
  • Technical theatre entertainment technology prepares students for work in all aspects of technical production, including modern entertainment technology, including: carpenter, props, electrician, scenic painter, light & sound board operator, stage manager, lighting design, scenic design, and sound design

Visual Arts & Media Arts

• Department is committed to offering an extensive program of courses for students whose goals range from a career in fine arts, graphic design, art history, photography, and journalism and to those pursuing personal enrichment
