F-1 New Arrival Handbook

Congratulations on your admission to Los Angeles City College as a full-time F-1 visa international student! We are excited to have you start your U.S. higher education journey at our campus as part of the LACC family! Please review important information found in the F-1 New Arrival Handbook.

Requirement Checklist

Before registering for your classes, there are mandatory steps for you to complete to ensure that you are on the right path. Please read the requirement checklist below and follow the steps!

STEP 1:  LACC’s Online OrientationAll new students must complete the LACC Online Orientation to receive early registration. We recommend that you complete the online orientation before your arrival in the U.S.

  • Please login to your Student Portal at
  • Click on the “Orientation” tab on your right
  • Follow the instructions, watch all the videos, and take the quizzes to receive full credit

STEP 2:  F-1 Student Online Orientation & Zoom Group Check-inYou are required to complete the online F-1 Student Check-in and attend the Zoom Group Check-in. The online orientation can be taken through Canvas. Please review the following steps so that you can access your Online Orienation and attend the Zoom Group Check-in.

STEP 1: Login to your LACCD student email account. Accept the invitation for Canvas (International Student Program).

STEP 2: Login in to Canvas. Select, International Student Program. Then, select and complete the Modules.  Watch this Canvas Tutorial Video for assistance.

STEP 4: Complete the F-1 Online Orientation (Six Modules).

STEP 3: Attend the Zoom Group Check-in. This meeting is required. You will meet the ISP team, receive assistance with your education plan, register for courses, and meet other international students.

  • SPRING Group Check-in Early Arrivals: Tuesday, January 11th @ 9:00am PST:
  • SPRING Group Check-in Late Arrivals: Tuesday, January 25th @ 9:00am PST

‚Äč***Failure to complete these sessions WILL result in cancellation of your admission to LACC.

*STEP 3:  ESL Guided Self-Placement*If English is your second language, our college's English/ESL and Counseling departments highly recommend that you take the ESL guided self-placement test at LACC to determine your starting level before your registration for classes. You may contact Crisalia Terrazas, to schedule your guided self-placement.

*STEP 4:  Enroll in Counseling 40A Class (1 unit) during Your First Semester at LACC

You are required to enroll in the Counseling 40A/College Success Seminar class (1 unit) designed for F-1 visa international students during your first semester at LACC if this is your first time attending a U.S. college/university. Students who have previously attended a U.S. college or university and completed at least one semester at the institution are exempt from this requirement. If you have previously attended a language school (e.g. Kaplan) but not a U.S. college or university, you are NOT exempt from this requirement.
