Researching Career and Academic Options

What Can I Do with this Major?  This is a great resource that shows the most common career outlets for people in a given major.  Note that at the bottom of each major's report, there is a list of industry-specific job search sites and professional organizations.   

O-Net O-Net is a career database powered by the US Dept of Labor and Statistics. Review reports of over 900 specific jobs to gain a deeper understanding of what tasks and activities people do as part of their jobs, education required, training opportunities, and salary/growth projections.  

Occupational Outlook Handbook: This is another site provided by the US Dept. of Labor and Statistics. It contains fewer specific job reports than O-Net, but some prefer the layout of this site to O-Net. 

California Career Zone: This site has several interactive features: take a lifestyle assessment to see how much money you need to make to support your lifestyle goals; watch videos about what it's like to work in a specific field; create a cover letter and/or resume with their interactive tool.  

CareerOneStop: Great reference guides for job-seekers with various backgrounds: military, career changers, 55+, and job seekers with a criminal record, to name a few. 

LACC Career and Educational Pathways: Research the degree and certificate options offered at LACC. Click on specific programs to see which classes are needed to complete a given degree. Always speak with a counselor when planning your courses!

Internship Resources

Participating in an internship is an excellent way to gain experience in a field, build your resume, and enhance your professional network. Links to internship boards are below. You can also make an appointment with a career counselor or intern to discuss additional opportunities that have been shared directly with us. 

Internship Boards

Indeed.com - Indeed.com lists internship opportunities as well as job opportunities. To view internship opportunities, list the field or company you are interested in, i.e., 'graphic design' and your location on the homepage, then 'search'. On the results page, additional filters will appear. Select the 'job type' filter & select internship to view opportunities. 

LinkedIn.com - Similar to indeed.com, LinkedIn lists internships and jobs. Select the 'jobs' icon at the top of the page and apply filters for location & internship. If you apply for a position through LinkedIn.com, be sure you have a current profile.  The Career Center can help you create one - even with no or limited work experience. 

wayup.com - Specializes in internships & entry-level jobs.  You can search opportunities without signing up through links at the bottom of the homepage. 

idealist.org - Jobs, internships, and voluntary opportunities within the non-profit sector. 

usajobs.gov - internships and jobs though the US Federal Government. Includes remote & LA area opportunities.

Globalexperiences.com - Search by field, location, or season. Find opportunities to work abroad! Also includes virtual experiences.

Mediabistro.com - internships and job in media/creative companies.

Although we do not offer job placement services, we can help connect students to existing resources. Please check the following resources to look for current job listings. We are happy to meet with you to discuss strategies to optimize the use of these resources. 

College Central Network - Internal Job Board including jobs sent directly to LACC. 

Indeed.com - common job search board. Be sure to use the filters that appear after your initial search (initial search only allows for job title & location). 

Linkedin.com - LinkedIN lists LOTS of job & internship opportunities. It is a great investment of your time to create a complete profile & use this powerful tool to network. Searching for employees who currently work as companies you are interested in (to use as references) is just one smart way to use this resource. 

ziprecruiter.com - Job database that uses AI to refer you to potential employers, and vice versa. Take time to carefully fill out your profile on this site to get more matches. 

Snagajob.com - Job board for hourly jobs

Instawork.com - App designed to connect you to shifts & hourly work. Create your own schedule & accept offers you are interested in. 

Seasoned.co - Job Search database for restaurant/food service opportunities. 

Hollywood Worksource Center - This is the local state unemployment office, located just south of LACC on Melrose Ave. You will need to complete an intake process, but access lots of local job opportunities through this agency.
