First Year Experience

Starting a new educational journey can be exciting and overwhelming. Whether you are transitioning from high school or attending college for the first time, there are many decisions to make and challenges to face.

The First Year Experience (FYE) program is designed to help you be successful in your first year of college by providing a supportive, nurturing environment complete with educational and career guidance, so you may achieve your educational and career goals.

What do we offer?

  • First two years of classes is free (enrollment fees) via LA College Promise and AB19/AB2*
  • Priority Registration
  • Guaranteed enrollment in Math, English, and a selection of other classes
  • Dedicated faculty members committed to your success
  • Math and English Supplemental Instruction (SI) tutors
  • Special FYE social and extracurricular activities
  • Committed counselors to help you create an educational plan for transfer to university and/or preparing for your career
  • Success coaches to help answer general questions, refer you to resources, and support you on your college journey
  • Book loans for English courses
  • Free laptops
  • Free travel abroad opportunities

Requirements

  • Be a first-time college student (college classes taken in high school are OK)
  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 units
  • Must be enrolled in FYE Math, English, and Counseling 40A/B/C during the first year
  • Must meet with an FYE counselor AND a success coach once per semester
  • Attend math Supplemental Instruction (SI) tutorial sessions
  • Attend Summer Bridge

Some exceptions to requirements may apply, including for students with a disability who participate in the OSS program. Please meet with an FYE counselor for more details.

*CA Assembly Bill 2 projected to pass into law August/September 2019 will pay for 2nd year of Promise. AB19 is currrent law covering the first year.
