News and Events for the week of May 24

Good Monday Morning,

We are now only two weeks away from our virtual graduation. I wanted to thank everyone for their hard work assisting our students and making them feel welcome in an ever-changing environment. We are ending spring semester with a 101% headcount of what we had in spring 2020 and at 97% enrollment.

2021 Virtual Graduation

Our own Cinema-TY program produced our 2021 virtual graduation that will take place on Tuesday, June 8 at 5pm. I hope your department is planning a fun viewing party. Make it one for the memory books!

Returning to Campus

Our District believes that the Yellow Tier will remain until June 15, the same date that Governor Newsom has set for California’s economy to fully open for business. At that time, we expect there might be changes to the state and county mask requirements, but not sooner. We all need to be aware of recent statements made by LACDPH officials that institutes of higher education, including LACC, could very well be operating in a “pre-COVID environment” for the fall semester. This situation is changing rapidly, and I will share information and updates as we receive them.

Black Lives Matter Town Hall

We had another great Black Lives Matter Town Hall on Friday with Attorney Areva Martin who was so inspiring and insightful. We also heard the voices of some students about their experiences during this remote environment.

District Reviewing Vaccination Requirements

Regarding any District vaccination requirements for students, faculty, and staff, please be aware that the District’s Office of General Counsel is reviewing the implications of such a requirement and is studying statements made by other colleges, including the UC and CSU systems.

Thank You Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the COVID-19 Max-Vax event yesterday which we held with Kedren Health. All three vaccinations were offered. We had students and their families, along with some staff and their families in attendance.

Virtual Black Graduation Ceremony

Our Black Graduation Ceremony will take place virtually this Tuesday, May 25 at 3pm.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Town Hall

This Friday, May 28 at 11:30am, we are hosting a special Town Hall to commemorate Asian Pacific American Heritage month. Our special guests will be Connie Chung Joe, Chief Executive Officer of Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles, and she will be joined by Trustee Mike Fong. This is a very important opportunity to begin to understand our APIDA community and embrace the work ahead with our APIDA community to the real sense of belonging.

On Campus Food Distribution Event

We will be teaming with Supervisor Sheila Kuehl’s office to host another food distribution event on our campus on Friday, June 11th. Stay tuned for more information.

Campus Climate Survey

Please complete the campus climate survey. We need this for our program review and for our accreditation work we are doing now.

The campus will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 31.

BELIEVE. ACHIEVE. SUCCEED.

Be well. Get vaccinated.
