News and Events for the week of March 2

Good Monday Morning:

Our campus continues to be a hotspot for a whirlwind of activities. Last week we welcomed Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman to our campus for the re-dedication of his theater and a conversation with our students. Mr. Freeman also stayed and met with LACC staff, donors and alumni for a post event reception.

Last week we also hosted a series of Black History Month events which were all well attended. Thank you to everyone who assisted with and attended all of our events.

Please continue to remind your students to vote. See below for more information on our Voting Centers, everyone can now vote at LACC!

Upcoming 90th Anniversary Activities

On the afternoon of April 25, 2020 from 1pm to 3pm, LACC will host a panel discussion with Chancellor Block from UCLA, President Covino from Cal State LA and myself in recognition of all three public higher education systems in the City of Los Angeles starting at the same location. We are finalizing plans for this event so that we can get additional information out to you on the details of questions and facilitators of the event.

At the end of the year, we will have another “Celebration of Us” the evening of Friday, June 5th. Then our finale will be our 90th graduation on Tuesday, June 9th at the Greek Theater at 5pm.

LACC Community Corner

  • On Tuesday of last week, I met with the new principal of Vine Street Elementary school. She is focused on bringing up the outcomes of the school and she had some interesting ideas. More to come on that.
  • On Wednesday there was an LA Promise Zone Leadership Council meeting held at LACC. The partners are rolling up their sleeves because we have a lot to accomplish in the upcoming five years. I may create a special new section on “This Week” as things gear up with the work in the LA Promise Zone so that you are kept up to date of the great work happening in our community.
  • I attended the Community College League of California CEO Symposium at the end of last week.
  • This week we were scheduled to attend the UCLA-CESMII Annual Meeting; however, it was postponed due to travel restrictions on participants.

Let’s have another great week at LACC!
