News and Events for the week of March 18

Good Tuesday Morning:

It is official! We kicked off our 90th anniversary celebration with almost 700 people who joined us at the Beverly-Wilshire hotel last week for our Foundation Gala. Once we know what we netted from the event, I will let you know. We even generated awareness with press, take a look at the coverage we recieved in Broadway World.

As mid-term exams begin later this week, and Spring Break approaches, don't forget that we still have space in our late start classes that begin on April 8th, right after Spring Break.

This Past Week

We had a great meeting with the Pacific Asian Consortium in Employment (PACE). They want to partner with us on a new project that involves a grant to provided assistance to entrepreneurs wanting to develop products and take them to market. I am very interested in doing this. 

The Week Ahead
Pop-Up Food Bank

Our pop-up food pantry, with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as some other pre-packaged food items, will be on campus this Thursday, 3/21.

Visit from the City of LA

The Los Angeles City Controller stopped by yesterday morning to see our Food Bank in action. We also be showed him the other things we are doing for our student basic needs. 

Artist Lecture featuring Jeremiah Chiu

Today, Tuesday (3/19) we will be hosting our third Artist Lecture featuring artist Jeremiah Chiu. It’s free and open to the public in Chem 3 from 6pm to 7:30pm.

Student Workshop on How to Feel More Confident

A student workshop on “How to Feel More Confident” will be held on Wednesday (3/20) at 12:30pm in the Student Union Conference Room on the 2nd floor.

Mid-term Nutritious Meals for Students Starting Thursday (3/21)

The next phase of the Food for Thought Project is our Midterm Meals Program. LACC will be distributing meals to 400 students each morning, from 8:00am to 10:00am (or until we run out), starting Thursday, 3/21/19 and will continue distribution the following week Monday, 3/25, Tuesday, 3/26, and Wednesday, 3/27.

LACC Dietetics is preparing freshly made yogurt parfaits with granola, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, and almond butter and jelly sandwiches. In addition, our LACC Bookstore (Cub Store) will provide 400 lunch meals each day with items such as Kraft Foods Mac & Cheese Easy Mac Cups, Campbell’s Soup Chicken with Mini Noodles, Starkist Lunch To-Go Tuna Kit, Frito-Lay Chips, and bottled water. The Bookstore is also supplementing breakfast with juice boxes, Quaker Apple-Walnut Oat Cups, Kellogg’s Mini Cereals, and milk.

With the assistance of students working in Student Services, Social Media, ASG, Dietetics, and our Ralph Bunch Scholars Program we will make, package, and then distribute these meals in the Student Union Building, 1st floor, on the dates listed above.

President’s Activities This Week
  • I met with the City of LA Controller yesterday.
  • Board of Trustees Committee meetings are on Wednesday.
  • Maria S. Salina, President & CEO of the LA Chamber of Commerce is visiting LACC on Friday. 
Coming Up
  • We will host an Artist Lecture featuring Tetsuji Aono and Luis Flores on Tuesday, 3/26 in Chem 3 from 6pm to 7:30pm.
  • On Wednesday, 3/27 at 2pm, the Theatre Academy will present Universal Hilton Workshop, an anthology of six short plays developed, written and performed by advanced actors in the Theatre Academy.
  • Remember there are no classes on Thursday, March 28, and Friday, March 29 begins Spring break so no classes Friday, Saturday or all of the next week. Classes resume on Saturday, April 6. The campus is closed as we celebrate the Cesar Chavez Holiday on Monday, April 1.

I was so proud last week to welcome everyone to the Foundation Gala last Tuesday as the President of this institution of excellence – LA City College… the City’s College.
