News and Events for the week of January 19

Good Tuesday Morning,

I hope you all had a peaceful and restful day off yesterday. Yesterday, we celebrated the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., and his words resonate about our condition today in our country. He said:

“Love is creative and redemptive. Love builds up and unites; hate tears down and destroys. The aftermath of the ‘fight with fire’ method...is bitterness and chaos, the aftermath of the love method is reconciliation and creation of the beloved community...Yes, love-which means understanding, creative, redemptive goodwill, even for one’s enemies-is the solution.”

For those of you who joined us on Friday at our Black Lives Matter Town Hall, it was a great opportunity to us to begin the deep conversation about the challenges faced by our democracy in our time and how we are coping with all of the challenges we have been facing. Many of you have commented to me how good this Town Hall was for you. You can look forward to many more of these opportunities. Thank you to those of you who had an opportunity to join us.

COVID-19 Vaccination Eligibility and Availability

Last week the District sent an email outlining information regarding COVID-19 vaccination eligibility and availability for educators. Currently, in Los Angeles the vaccine eligibility list includes all healthcare industry workers, including staff employees at urgent and primary care clinics, research laboratories, pharmacies and dental offices. Faculty and staff in education are in Phase 1B, Tier 1 and the county estimates that vaccines for Phase 1B will begin sometime next month. The exact process on how LACCD employees are to be notified to receive the vaccination is in the works. Detailed information on the distribution will be sent out well ahead of the first vaccinations. We are fortunate that our LACCD Director of Communications and External Relations, William Boyer, is on the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Vaccination Task Force and is providing us with information as soon as it is available.

Inauguration Day

Tomorrow is Inauguration Day. I encourage everyone to safely watch the proceedings at home and try to avoid any travel outside. Since we are all staying close to home now, it should not pose any problems for us. All major cities are on high alert in the event that there are rioters who take to the streets.

Annual Winter Retreat for Classified Staff

This Friday (1/22) we will hold our Annual Winter Retreat for our classified staff. All others are welcome to join us, but classified staff are reassigned for the day to this Retreat. Deanna and Ric will be here to facilitate some of the activities so it should be fun and informative. For classified staff, if you RSVP by Wednesday at noon, you will be entered into a drawing for gift cards.

Just a couple of weeks before our Spring term begins. Our enrollment is strong going into the Spring 2021 term. Please have them go to the Cub Store website to sign up for the program. We want to help to ensure our students’ success in classes.
