News and Events for the week of December 7

Good Monday Morning:

Thank you to everyone who participated last week in our Giving Tuesday donation effort to support our students in the upcoming December 16th Holiday Food Distribution event. In light of what is happening with COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles, the giveaway will be done electronically with gift cards emailed to students who apply. If you missed giving your donation last Tuesday, it is not too late to help. Please send your contribution through the Foundation: We greatly appreciate anything you can give.

New Stay-at-Home Orders

Last Thursday, Governor Newsom implemented a regional stay-at-home order imploring Californians to stay home for the next three weeks. Under Newsom’s direction, if a designated region in California has ICU hospital capacity that falls below 15%, the stay-at-home order is triggered for a period of three weeks. Los Angeles met that threshold this weekend. This means that bars, wineries, nail and hair salons, and other personal care services will close. Private gatherings of any size will be prohibited; restaurants can remain open only for takeout and delivery; and retail stores can stay open at 20% capacity. All non-essential travel is temporarily restricted statewide.

Open Enrollment for Spring 2021

Today begins open enrollment for Spring 2021. Classes are still open for Winter 2021 as well. We know everyone is frustrated and tired with Zoom, but I encourage you to have your students take just one class so that they can stay connected. Even if they just take one class, they can still qualify for a reduced amount of financial aid if they are eligible. We want to keep our students connected so that when the vaccine is made available, probably sometime in early to late spring, they are still with us and they can return to campus as we return to campus. We have no set date as to when a vaccine might be available to us, but I am hoping sometime in spring. The light at the end of that tunnel is beginning to shine.

Congratulations to The LACC Collegian

Our Journalism students have done it again! Congratulations to our Collegian newspaper staff for being named a finalist in the 2021 Crown Awards. All finalists will receive either a Gold or Silver Crown at the virtual awards ceremony in March 2021. We made it to the top out of a total of 849 digital, newspapers, magazines, and yearbooks published during the 2019-2020 academic year that were eligible for judging these awards.

Preparing for Final Exams Workshop

This Tuesday, December 8, Health and Wellness/Life Skills will host “Preparing for Final Exams,” a student workshop beginning at 12:30pm. Students can learn how to help manage anxiety around test taking and practice techniques to help them remain relaxed and calm. Please contact Joe Exnowski for more information at Join via Zoom ID 96403481457 password 614691.

Free Flu Shots

For the next two Saturdays, December 12 and 19, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is offering free flu shots with no appointments needed through their Flu Vaccination Family Clinic. Their walk-up clinic is located at 3440 Torrance Boulevard in Torrance and their drive-up clinics are located at 468 E. Santa Clara Street in Arcadia; 5363 Balboa Boulevard in Encino; and 23838 Valencia Boulevard in Valencia. The flu vaccine is recommended for children 6 months of age or older.

Black Lives Matter Town Hall

Next week on Friday, December 18 at 1:30pm our Black Lives Matter Town Hall will feature holiday traditions highlighting how the many different cultures from around the globe celebrate the holidays. Our Annual Holiday Party will directly follow. Please be on the lookout for a special gift that will arrive in the mail prior to the party. Please do not open your present before December 18 as we want to open them together during our celebration. We have randomly placed special surprise certificates ranging from $10 to $100 and we want to enjoy opening the gifts when we are all virtually together. We will also be announcing the winners of the “Holiday Zoom Background Spectacular” contest that afternoon. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

This is the last week of class before finals. Please let us know if any of your students need help.

BELIEVE.  ACHIEVE.  SUCCEED.  Making it happen each day for our students.

Be well. Stay safe.
