News and Events for the week of May 28

Good Tuesday Morning:

Finals Week is here and our campus is buzzing with activity. We are one short week away from graduation! Please note, graduation rehearsal will be held today at 11 am in the Student Union, 3rd floor multipurpose room.

Finals Meals

Please let your students know that we have grab and go meals that they can get from the Bookstore today, tomorrow and Thursday to help fuel them through their final exams.

Registration for Summer 2019 and Fall 2019 Classes

Registration for Summer 2019 and Fall 2019 classes is open now. Please remind your students to register for class before they leave this semester.

Extended Hours in the Library

As we did beginning last year, the Library has extended hours so that our students can put in the extra time to complete papers, projects, get assistance, and study for finals. Please be sure to let your students know that from today through Thursday, May 30th, the Library will be open from 7:30am until 11pm. Normal hours resume on Friday, May 31.

All of the end of the year events and graduation celebrations/ceremonies being held on campus over the next few weeks are listed on the website. I hope to see all of you at some of our upcoming graduation events!

LAST WEEK

  • Last week the Associated Student Government hosted a celebration of Cultural Diversity Day.
  • The Music Department presented the Philharmonic Choir & Chamber Chorale as part of the Evening Concert Series.
  • Auditions for enrollment in the Theatre Academy for the Fall 2019 semester took place in the Camino Theatre.
  • The LACC Book Program welcomed Craig Loftin, Professor of American Studies at CSU Fullerton, who explored the LGBTQ civil rights movement before and after the Stonewall Riots of 1969. The ONE Archives Foundation’s History of the LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement History Panel series was also on display at the event.
  • The Kinesiology/Dance Department held modern dance, jazz and flamenco performances by faculty and staff.
  • The Music Department hosted the Music Academy Applied Completion in the Herb & Lani Alpert Recital Hall.
  • A training was held to become an Ally for Undocumented & LGBTQ Students.
  • The Academic Senate awarded Professor Harry Manos the Faculty Learning Award and Professor Christine Gengaro the Scholar in Residence Award.

And Now FOR WHAT IS HAPPENING This Week…

Pop-up Food Pantry (On Thursday)

Please be sure your students know that our Pop-up Food Pantry, located in front of the Student Union, which usually is ready to distribute at about 10:30am until around 12:30pm, or until the food is gone.

Finals Week Meals Program

Grab and Go healthy meals are available for students in the Bookstore Tuesday, 5/28 through Thursday 5/31. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available beginning at 8am on Tuesday.

Fueling Your Finals Week

Donuts, coffee and scantrons are available Tuesday through Thursday from 12:30pm to 1:30pm and from 5:30pm to 6:30pm outside the Student Union.

New Transfer Degree in Social Justice Studies

The application for a new Social Justice Studies Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT)/ Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) was approved by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office on May 20, 2019.

City College Students Named Finalists in L.A. Press Club Competition

Photojournalists, artists, designers and reporters from the L.A. City College Collegian have been selected as finalists in the 2019 Los Angeles Press Club SoCal Journalism Awards Contest.

Judges at press clubs across the nation evaluated more than 1,700 entries, and the Collegian and Collegian Times Magazine staff moved forward to finalist status with the Cal State Long Beach Daily 49er, the Northridge Sundial and the Claremont College Student Life in the college media category.  The L.A. Press Club Awards will announce the top winners at its banquet and awards gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel on June 30, 2019.

Student Film Screenings

On Tuesday, 5/28 and Wednesday, 5/29, come see our LACC student films at 6:30pm in the Morgan Freeman Theater (CC 176). On Thursday, 5/30 at 6pm there will be a screening of the Interdepartmental Collaborations.

Career Expo 2019

On Thursday, 5/30 at 11am the Career Center is hosting a Career Expo in the Main Quad. Be sure to let students know to bring their resumes.

Citadel Deadline for Submissions

Thursday, 5/30 is the deadline for submissions for the Citadel Literary Journal. Email your completed submissions to: thecitadellacc@gmail.com.

Coming Up NEXT WEEK

  • On Monday, 6/3 STEM Pathways will hold their End of Year Recognition Celebration at 11am in the Student Union – 3rd Floor Multipurpose Room.
  • On Wednesday, 6/5 the Theatre Academy will host auditions at noon in the Camino Theatre.

In this last week of the semester, let this week end your year in a wonderful way at our great LA City College… the City’s College.
