News and Events for the week of May 20

Good Monday Morning:

Time is flying by and we are two short weeks away from graduation. As the semester enters its final weeks, please let your students know that we have assistance available to help them prepare for their final exams. If they are not sure where to find help, please send them to our LACC Welcome Center in the Student Services building.

I have some very exciting news to share. After working with the Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services for the past few years, we have teamed together with the USDA to provide CalFresh hot meal benefits to students at all LACCD campuses. We are the first community college system in the country to have our cafeterias designated to use the CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program on our campus. This, in addition to our Pop Up Food Pantry here at LACC, are the beginning stages of our campuses working to meet the basic needs of all of our students. The program will phase in beginning at the colleges with Culinary programs. We hope to have it at LACC sometime next spring.

Registration for Summer 2019 and Fall 2019 Classes

Registration for Summer 2019 classes is open now.

Registration for Fall 2019 is open to all students beginning today.

LAST WEEK
  • Last Monday we held a Town Hall on Safety and Security on Campus. We plan to have a few Safety Days this summer to go over emergency preparedness items.
  • Channel 7 (KABC-TV) came out to our Pop-Up Food Pantry last Thursday for a story that aired on the 6pm broadcast that evening. Footage will be up on our Press Room section of the website shortly.
  • On Monday evening, I served on a panel at an event for women in Los Angeles and I spoke of the campaign to help our students with their basic needs. People are so interested in the great work we do here at City that I got so much support from the audience, that they gave me a couple of checks for the Foundation and I had several people come up to me with donations they will give to the program.
  • Last Tuesday, our Dean’s Tea recognized students who reached outstanding scholastic achievement by earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. It was a very special afternoon.
  • On Tuesday afternoon I met with Union Bank, who committed immediately to help with our Foundation’s “Critical Thought” program – to help our students basic needs.
  • We hosted a musical Student Showcase that same evening.
  • Last Wednesday, we hosted a Foster Care Awareness Month Resource Fair, a LGBTQ+ Pride Day and Health Fair, an Artist Lecture with April Bey, an Eco-Fair and a Jazz Band recital. Busy day!
  • On Wednesday, the District Budget Committee voted to require only 1% of the budget being required for the deficit repayment. This cuts our payment low enough going forward that we can continue to plan to aggressively recruit and recover from where we were.
  • On Thursday evening, the Yamaha Artist Concert Series presented a concert with our very own pianist Dr. Milen Kirov. It was beyond amazing!
  • Our Theatre Academy presented the final shows of Hot L Baltimore. I saw it Friday night and thoroughly enjoyed it!
  • I had the most amazing morning on Friday because I spent it with eight of our Ralph Bunche Scholars. It was so pleasurable for me to converse with our wonderful students. I wish so much that I could spent this time with all of our students. I will just leave it to all of you to represent!
  • On Friday afternoon I was able to spend some time with our Child Development students who are graduating. It was a very special evening!
  • Two new banners were placed on campus, one on the Student Union and one on our Student Services building for our 90th anniversary, both featuring our students.
  • Our permits have been cleared and we will soon be putting up huge banners on the buildings facing Vermont.
