WENDELL WESTBROOK NAMED HEAD COACH

OF LADY CUBS BASKETBALL PROGRAM

LOS ANGELES (June 28, 2007) -- Long time men’s assistant basketball coach Wendell Westbrook has accepted the position of head women’s basketball coach at Los Angeles City College. Westbrook most recently completed his 11th season as right hand man to head men’s basketball coach Mike Miller and fifth season as Associate Head Coach.

The 2007-08 season will be Westbrook’s 16th season as a college coach. The Missouri native’s previous duties in the men’s program included overseeing day-to-day operations as well floor coaching and coordinating the Cubs recruiting efforts. This will be his first season coaching a college women’s team.

“I’m excited with the opportunity to move the Lady Cubs into a competitive, winning program,” said Westbrook. “The potential talent that surrounds LA City College is significant and I fully expect that we can be competitive next season in the South Coast Conference.”

Prior to LA City, Westbrook spent the 1996-97 season at Cal State Dominguez Hills and four years (1992-96) at Compton College. His four year stint at Compton resulted in four consecutive appearances in the California state play-offs.

As an assistant at LA City College, Westbrook was instrumental in the Cubs winning 11 straight South Coast Conference Championships. This also includes two State Championship appearances, the 2003 State Championship, and nine trips to the California community college basketball “Final Eight.” The Cubs recorded 317 wins against only 61 losses (.839) during his tenure.

Westbrook, who replaces former coach Bruno Sandoval, aims to improve upon the Lady Cubs’ 5-24 overall record in 2006-07 and 2-6 in the South Coast Conference.
