Los Angeles City College will
compete with students from the University of Kentucky at Lexington,
the College of William and Mary, the University of Oregon at Eugene,
and Indiana University at Bloomington for top honors for Sports
Story of the Year in the 2009 Associated Collegiate Press Contest.
The American Society of Newspaper Editors co-sponsored the
competition, and selected a story that ran in the May issue of the
Collegian headlined Paper Trail May Lead to Problems for Menšs
Basketball, by Mars Melnicoff.
Places for each of the finalist schools will be announced next month
in Austin, Texas at ACPšs Annual National College Media Convention.
ACP states that judges looked for several components in finalists
stories, including initiative and original reporting of a situation,
problem or issue affecting students. Judges also looked for stories
that demonstrated leadership, sensitivity, strong writing and
fairness.
There is no separation between two-year and four-year colleges in
the story of the year category. City College won two ACP National
Awards last year (the first time in 38 years). |
