The LACC Department of Communication Studies is committed to student learning, academic success and life long skills with knowledge gained from our diverse discipline. We are dedicated to helping students develop and improve their understanding of the ever-expanding ways in which we all communicate within and across various channels, contexts, and cultures.
The Communication Studies Department promotes the effective practice of human communication with foundational coursework in oral communication theory, practical exploration and skills development, augmented with course options that add dimension and depth to the student’s understanding of the discipline — such as interpersonal, argumentation, intercultural, oral interpretation of literature, and forensics.
A survey of employers by the National Association of Colleges and Employers ranked communication skills as the #1 attribute they seek in potential employees. Moreover, the Chicago Tribune reported all college graduates should successfully complete communication courses in order "to obtain and enhance their communication skills" making them a commodity to potential employers.
Students in any field of study will benefit from our courses. Communication courses satisfy general education and transfer requirements. Motivated students can also earn an Associates Degree with an emphasis in Communication Studies.
The Communication Studies Department is also home of the LACC Forensics Speech & Debate team. City Speech & Debate has a historical legacy of success that dates back to the early 1900s! Do you want to be a part of history? Join Forensics.
