English-ESL SCHOLARSHIPS

Spring 2010

 

The following scholarships are available from the English-ESL Department.
Students are encouraged to apply!

NOTE: The following dates apply to all scholarships. Specific instructions for each scholarship can be found with that scholarship's fillable pdf form. You may also download the pdf form and fill it in by hand or you may come by the English Department for a form.
  1. DEADLINE: The completed application must be submitted to the secretary of the English/ESL Department, SciTech Building, Room 222, no later than 5 PM, Wednesday, April 7th, 2010.
  2. All interviews will be conducted on Friday, April 16th.
  3. Winners must attend the Award Ceremony in May (date and time TBD).

The Agnes Partin Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 will be given to an outstanding student who plans to pursue a career related to the field of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to pursue a career in teaching English.

The student who applies for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be taking or have taken English 101.
  2. Have a 3.4 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Plan to transfer.
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.

The Albert Teresa Memorial Award

A scholarship of $500 will be given to an outstanding upper-level ESL student in the name of Albert Teresa, a former member of the English/ESL Department at Los Angeles City College. The student who applies for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be nominated by an ESL faculty member.
  2. Plan to graduate from LACC or transfer to a four-year college or university.
  3. Plan to enter a career or profession.
  4. Have completed at least 12 units of ESL.
  5. Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units of ESL at Level 4 or above.

The Boyd Collins Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 will be given to an outstanding student of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to major in English.

The student who applies for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be taking or have taken English 102 or any second year literature course.
  2. Have a 3.4 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Plan to transfer.
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.

The Charles Davis Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 will be given to an outstanding student of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to pursue a literary career.

The student who applies for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be taking or have taken English 101.
  2. Have a 3.3 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Plan to transfer.
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.

The Kathy Chatterton Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 will be given to an outstanding upper-level ESL student in the name of Kathy Chatterton, a former member of the English/ESL Department at Los Angeles City College. The student who applies for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be nominated by an ESL faculty member.
  2. Plan to graduate from LACC or transfer to a four-year college or university.
  3. Plan to enter a career or profession.
  4. Have completed at least 12 units of ESL.
  5. Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units of ESL at Level 4 or above.

The Miriam Kirshenbaum Cassyd Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 will be given to an outstanding female student who plans to pursue a career related to social justice and helping the underprivileged. All who meet the following criteria are invited to apply.

The female student who applies for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be taking or have taken English 21 or above.
  2. Have a 3.0 GPA with a minimum 12 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Preference given to students who plan to transfer, but not required
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.

The Robert Rangel Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 will be given to an outstanding ESL student who is enrolled in ESL Level 2, 3, or 4 at Los Angeles City College. The student who applies for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be nominated by an ESL faculty member.
  2. Have completed at least 12 units of ESL.
  3. Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units of ESL 2, 3, or 4.

The Ronald Emmons Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 will be given to an outstanding student of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to African American males who intend to major in English, with an emphasis in Creative Writing.

The student who applies for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be taking or have taken English 101.
  2. Have a 3.0 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Plan to transfer.
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.
