MISSION STATEMENT & STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Department Mission Statement:
The Department of Art and Architecture provides learners with:

courses that develop visual knowledge, theory, creativity and self-expression;

technical, perceptual, and conceptual skills necessary for future artistic growth; and

skills for entry into 4-year colleges or workforce careers in studio art, architecture, graphic design, and related fields in business and entertainment.

Degree:  Art AA - General - Plan A and Plan B
Degree Description:
In completing the AA degree in Art, students acquire training in techniques and disciplines of art-making. As career opportunities for limited for those with only an Associate of Arts degree, the Art Department strongly advises continuing training at a four-year college, university, or art school.  Students are expected to develop a portfolio with instructor guidance.
Degree Learning Outcomes

The student will: 
 1. Acquire and integrate visual art concepts and/or technical skills.
 2. Practice and learn visual art concepts by performing skill-based exercises. 
 3. Design and implement independent skill-based projects to demonstrate acquired knowledge and mastery. 
 4. Engage in inquiry and critical thinking and evaluation. 
 5. Demonstrate, in portfolio-level projects, the skills and knowledge necessary for entrance into institutions of higher learning.
   
Degree:  Art History AA - General - Plan A and Plan B 
Degree Learning Outcomes
The student will:
1. Apply fundamental art and art historical terminology and appreciation of process to analyze works.
2. Articulate the historical, social and aesthetic functions of art. 
3. Discuss major works and cultural shifts in art history from pre-history to the modern world.
4. Appraise the diverse roles and meanings of art across cultures and geographic boundaries.
5. Conduct research and use visual evidence and reason to construct and examine theories. 
6. Analyze, compare and contrast works of art with appropriate methodology and terminology. 
7. Solve various art and art history related problems using creative and critical thinking skills. 
   
Degree:  AA Graphic Design - Plan B  
Degree Description:
This program provides the foundation for careers in computer graphics, advertising design, commercial illustration and desktop publishing. The creative and practical aspects of visual communication are equally stressed, with an emphasis on contemporary trends.
