ASTRONOMY 001 - ELEMENTARY ASTRONOMY
(UC:CSU) - 3.00 UNITS
ADVISORY: English 28 or concurrent enrollment in Learning Skills 1 or 7. A fascinating
look into the general principles and the fundamentals facts of astronomy. This
introductory courses is designed for the non-technical student. Topics covered include
the history and science of astronomy, the solar system, our sun, stars, galaxies and
cosmology. No college math preparation is needed. If a student wishes to transfer this
as a lab science course, the student must also complete Astronomy 5.

Advisory: Astronomy 1. A presentation of the methods and techniques used by
astronomers to determine the nature of the universe. This course involves working with
and learning the operation of Astronomical instruments and equipments including the
12 inch telescope housed in the Los Angeles City College Observatory.

ASTRONOMY 011 - STARS, GALAXIES, AND THE UNIVERSE

This conceptual course surveys the universe beyond the solar system. Students learn
about stars, stellar evolution, black holes, galaxies, the big bang, cosmology and the
possibility of extraterrestrial life.

1. Students who have not completed Chemistry 60 or 68, or the approved equivalent
course, must earn a satisfactory score on the Chemistry Readiness Exam which is
administered by the LACC Assessment Office. For more information about the exam
and when it is administered contact the Matriculation Office at (323)953-4000, ext.

All exam appointments must be scheduled in person in AD103.
2. Challenges to prerequisites must be made through the Counseling Center in AD108.
Transcripts are required. For more information contact the Counseling Center at
(323)953-4000, ext. 2250. The Chemistry Readiness Exam applies only to
the chemistry course prerequisite. Passing the Chemistry Readiness Exam
does not waive the Math 125 prerequisite.
