The Writers' Block

LaunchPad is an educational software program that can help you with your grammar and writing skills. LaunchPad is available online and can be counted for FYE or course credit.

How to Access LaunchPad

Hi everyone! I’m Wendy from the Writers’ Block, and I’m going to show you how to use LaunchPad. LaunchPad is instructional software that helps students with grammar and writing skills. At the Writers’ Block, you can earn FYE or course credit for completing what are called “Learning Curves” in the LaunchPad program. We’ll talk about that more in the next video.

First, though, you’ll need to register for Tutoring 001, so you can use The Writers’ Block Services.

Then, go to the Writers’ Block website to request your Access Code. Just click on LaunchPad on the left-hand side, then click “request a LaunchPad access code,” and fill in the form. Within one business day, you’ll receive a code in an email, which will allow you to register for the Macmillan site.

The first time you access the program, you’ll need to create a Macmillan account and then enter the Access Code that was emailed to you.

When you’re ready to work, you can access LaunchPad right here from The Writers’ Block website.

You can also find instructions here about what to do in LaunchPad and how to get FYE or course credit for your LaunchPad activities.

When you sign in to LaunchPad, you’ll see a Welcome Page with some information about what to do in the program.

Be sure to watch the next video, “What to do in LaunchPad,” to get some information about all the activities you can do in LaunchPad.

That’s it, and we’ll hope to see you at the Writers’ Block!

Getting Started with LaunchPad

In this video, I’m going to show you what to do in LaunchPad. LaunchPad is instructional software that can help with grammar and writing skills.

Before you get started, make sure you’re registered for Tutoring 001. And if you haven’t requested a LaunchPad access code yet, you'll want to watch the first video, “How to Get Started in LaunchPad.”

When you’re ready to work, you can access LaunchPad right from the Writers’ Block website.

When you first log in, you'll see a Welcome Page with some information about what to do in LaunchPad. After you’ve read that, click on “enter your course,” and you’ll see a list of modules in blue.

We recommend starting with the "Welcome" unit, and then you can work on any module you want.

In each of the units, you’ll see an introduction (which has a nice, brief video), some study pages about the topic, and something called a “Learning Cuve.” The Learning Curve is an interactive activity to practice the skills you just learned. The Learning Curve has a dashboard with a “target score,” so it’s set up like a game.

To get started, just click “begin activity” and LaunchPad will provide multiple-choice questions for you to answer. If you don’t know a question, you can read the e-book page on the topic, get a hint, or have the program show the answer.

If you get a question incorrect, LaunchPad will automatically provide a link to the e-book page on the topic.

For each LearningCurve activity that you complete successfully, you’ll earn one hour of course or FYE credit. To get credit for a LearningCurve, you need to reach the target score of 480 points.

You can confirm if you have completed a LearningCurve activity by checking your LaunchPad gradebook. You’ll receive one full point in the LaunchPad gradebook for each LearningCurve activity you complete.

These points are added as hours to the Writers’ Block, and a report of your total time — Writers’ Block hours and LaunchPad — is provided to your professor every four weeks.

That’s it, we hope you enjoy LaunchPad, and we’ll see you soon at the Writers’ Block!
