VA Educational Benefits


  • Provides up to 36 months of full-time payments to eligible veterans and service members for approved education and training programs.
  • May also be used to reimburse certain VA-approved national tests and tests for licensure or certification.
  • Benefits are payable for 10 years following release from active duty.


  • Provides support to veterans who have a service-connected disability.
  • Eligible service members are entitled to educational and vocational counseling.
  • Provides educational and vocational counseling benefits to eligible dependent children of Vietnam veterans born with certain birth defects or children of Vietnam or Korean veterans born with Spina Bifida.

CHAPTER 33 (POST 9/11)

  • For individuals who served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001.
  • Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits are payable for training pursued on or after August 1, 2009.
  • No payments can be made under this program for training pursued before that date.
  • Veterans may receive benefits for any approved program offered by a school in the United States that is authorized to grant an associate (or higher) degree.
  • Veterans may also receive benefits for tutorial assistance or up to $2,000 for the reimbursement of one licensing or certification test.
  • If transferring from Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty, Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserves, or the Reserve Education Assistance Program to Post-9/11 GI Bill, a veteran may also receive Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits for flight training, apprenticeship or on-the-job training.
  • For members of the Armed Forces on August 1, 2009, the Department of Defense (DoD) may offer veterans the opportunity to transfer benefits to your spouse or dependent children.


  • Provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition.
  • Offers up to 45 months of education benefits.
  • May generally be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training.
  • Recipients may also be eligible for a fee waiver through the “Cal-Vet” program.


  • Includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.
  • May generally be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship, on-the-job training, and correspondence courses.
  • May be available to a member of the Selected Reserve.


  • A new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress.
  • Makes certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001 either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits.
