Transfer Requirements CSU

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU)

The California State University (Cal State or CSU) is a public university system in California composed of 23 campuses. While each campus in the system has its own unique geographic and curricular character, all campuses offer undergraduate and graduate instruction for professional and occupational goals as well as broad liberal education. Many of these programs are offered so that students can complete all upper-division and graduate requirements by part-time late afternoon and evening study.

Minimum Requirements for Transfer Admission

• 60 transferable semester units which include:

  • Minimum of 30 semester units of approved General Education coursework (from CSU General Education Breadth or IGETC GE patterns)

  • The "Golden Four" requirements (completed with a C- or higher grade):

    •  Oral Communication (CSU GE Area A1; IGETC Area 1C)
    •  Written Communication (CSU GE Area A2; IGETC Area 1A)
    •  Critical Thinking (CSU GE Area A3; IGETC Area 1B)
Engineering majors at some CSU campuses are exempt from Area A3.
    •  Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning (CSU GE Area B4; IGETC Area 2)

  • minimum 2.0 GPA in all transferable courses. Students applying to an impacted campus (e.g. Long Beach, Fullerton) and/or impacted major (e.g. Psychology, Business Administration) will need a higher GPA to be competitive.
  • Good academic standing at the last college or university attended.
  • Major Preparation: Majors at some campuses will require you to complete specific lower-division major courses before you transfer (see information on campus impaction and major preparation below).

*Please note that minimum requirements must be completed by the end of the spring term for fall admission and usually by the end of summer for winter/spring admission.

Major Preparation

Assist.org provides a list of major preparation courses that can be completed at a California Community College to fulfill lower-division major preparation for a CSU. Students are also able to fulfill major preparation requirements by completing an approved Associate Degree for Transfer in a major deemed similar to one they are applying to at a CSU.

Campus Impaction

An undergraduate major or campus is designated as impacted when the number of applications received from qualified applicants exceeds the number of available spaces. Impacted campuses and majors are able to use supplementary admission criteria (e.g. higher GPA, specific major course requirements) to screen applications.

General Education (GE)

California community college students may fulfill the required lower-division GE courses by completing the CSU GE-Breadth or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) at their community college before transferring to a CSU campus.

  • LACC CSU GE (2017-2018 Form)

  • LACC IGETC (2017-2018 Form) Students who are interested in applying to both CSU and UC campuses should follow the IGETC pattern.

Please note: STEM majors should priortize major preparation courses.

US History, Constitution & American Ideals is not a requirement for admission, but is required for graduation from a CSU. Therefore, you can be admitted to a CSU without completing the subject area, however, you must complete specific courses identified by your transfer institution after transfer in order to graduate from the CSU.

Associate Degree for Transfer

The Associate Degree for Transfer is a pathway established by the California State Legislature which provides priority transfer admission for students who complete Associate of Arts (AA-T) or Associate of Science (AS-T) degrees at California community colleges and meet all other admissions requirements. By completing an ADT, students fulfill major preparation and general education requirements for CSU campuses.
