Apply for Transfer


You should plan to apply for transfer admission the year prior to when you want to transfer to a university. Do not wait until you are completely finished with your coursework at LACC before you apply! Coursework can typically be in progress/planned at the time of application.

Private schools such as the University of Southern California (USC) and Loyola Marymount University (LMU) usually have a later application deadline than CSU and UC schools. Make sure to check with each private institution to verify application deadlines.

California State University (CSU)
  • For fall admission, apply October 1 - November 30 (the year prior to your transfer).
  • For spring admission, apply August 1 - 31 (the year prior to your transfer). 
  • For winter admission, apply July 1 - 31 (the year prior to your transfer).

    Not all campuses and/or majors may open for winter/spring admission.
University of California (UC)
  • For fall admission, apply November 1 - 30 (the year prior to your transfer). The application is available beginning August 1, but cannot be submitted until November.
  • For winter/spring admission, apply July 1 - 31 (the year prior to your transfer).

    Most UC campuses do not accept spring applications with the exception of UC Merced. Check the list of closed majors on the UC website or contact the university's admissions office.  
University of Southern California (USC)
  • Accepts applications for fall admission only. Application deadline is February 1 (the year you plan to transfer). Some programs in the Schools of Cinematic Arts (i.e Writing for Screen & Television), and all programs in the School of Dramatic Arts, Kaufman School of Dance, Thornton School of Music, and Iovine and Young Academy require applicants to apply by December 1.
Loyola Marymount University (LMU)
  • For fall admission, February 1 is the early priority admission deadline. March 15 is the regular decision deadline.
  • For spring admission, apply by October 15 (the year prior to your transfer).


Online applications are preferred by most colleges. Many private & independent schools, including USC, Pepperdine and Mount Saint Mary's, use the Common Application. Students are encouraged to apply on-line on the following websites:

  • CSU: $55 per campus
  • UC: $70 per campus
  • LMU: $60
  • USC: $80

Students can apply for an application fee waiver for up to 4 UC and 4 CSU campuses. Fee waivers are available to US citizens, permanent residents, and applicants eligible for AB540 benefits. You can apply for fee waivers directly through the UC and CSU application, and will be notified of your eligibility immediately.

Many private and independent schools also offer a fee waiver program available through the Common Application. Check with each school to verify the process for obtaining a fee waiver.
