Supplemental Instruction

Department Home

The Supplemental Instruction Program is an academic effort aimed at increasing the academic success and retention of in-coming and returning LACC students.

Students in this program are enrolled in developmental or First Year Experience (FYE) math and/or English classes. Each section has an assigned Supplemental Instruction mentor, who works with students in small groups (and individually) throughout the semester to support classroom activities. SI mentors are “embedded” in the classes they tutor: they attend all class meetings and “supplement” the work that students do in class via additional Study Group sessions.

The faculty members teaching these sections with an SI component meet regularly with the mentor to coordinate their curricula and share ideas for supporting students. They also meet weekly with their SI mentors to discuss classroom objectives and focus on at-risk students.
