New Program Participants

Please call the college's CalWORKs program at (323) 953-4000 ext. 2599 to make an appointment. You will be required to show verification of current benefits (Welfare to Work plan) and your current class schedule.

What's expected from a CalWORKs student?
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher
  • Meet the 20/30/35 hour county-approved program of activities
  • Comply with the Department of Social Services and CalWORKs/GAIN guidelines
What Do I Bring to My First Appointment?

The first appointment in the CalWORKs department is very important. You must bring to the office any current documentation that will help the counselors with your case. You must bring:

  • A GN6006 (VOC) or a GN 6005A (SIP) form (This form is provided to you by your GAIN service worker.)
  • Any related county paperwork that needs to be completed by CalWORKs
What Should I Expect During My First Appointment?

The first appointment will take approximately one hour. Please check in at the CalWORKs office at least ten minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. During your appointment with the counselor/advisor, the focus will be on your individual situation and case, and what your professional, academic, and personal goals are.

If you have not applied to Los Angeles City College yet, you may do so prior to coming in for your appointment by contacting the Office of Admissions & Records and filling out the admissions application for enrollment.

In addition, we will help you apply for Financial Aid assistance to obtain the Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOG). If you qualify, the fee waiver will waive your tuition fees. You will most likely only be responsible for a small student service fee and health fee, which may be reimbursed to you.

Next, we will refer you to the Assessment Center (AD 103) to schedule an appointment to take your Math, English, and/or ESL (English as a Second Language) placement exam. Although the test is not timed, you should allow at least an hour and a half to take the exam. The results of this exam will determine the appropriate courses you should enroll in to ensure academic success.
