The Citadel

The English/ESL Department's annual literary journal, The Citadel.

Cover illustration of The Citadel 2019The Citadel is a creative literary journal that is being revitalized by LACC’s English/ESL faculty; its last publication was in 2014. Throughout the years, it was expertly led under the advisement and leadership of Professor Sam Eisenstein before he retired in 2017.  First published in 1962, and for the last 52 years of its publication,The Citadel has prided itself in highlighting students’ literary work in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The Citadel will be an active journal featuring the creative works of LACC students. It will also involve the LACC community at-large, inviting the neighboring communities of Los Feliz, Hollywood, Koreatown, and Silverlake and beyond to publish their works, in the hopes of fostering a community in the literary arts.

The 2020 issue of The Citadel is being edited by the English/ESL department with an elected five-member editorial board of Professors Nadia Elahi (editor-in-chief), Danielle Muller (prose co-editor), Flavia Tamayo (poetry co-editor), Genevieve Patthey (poetry co-editor), and Jeffrey Nishimura.

Submissions are open to the public with a $10.00 fee, but currently enrolled LACC students may submit for free.

Please see The Citadel’s Facebook page for submissions guidelines. Submission guidelines are also available in the English/ESL department in JH301.

The Citadel Call for Submissions Spring 2020

NEW EXTENDED Deadline: Friday, June 19, 2020
Please submit your work to the LACC English/ESL Department at

Theme: Negotiating Identities - Voices of Politics, Race, Gender and Religion

As we enter a new decade, we are seeking submissions that reflect the hybridity of what it means to be who we are, especially as we consider the outcome of this year’s general election. Whether your prose or poetry touches on politics, race, gender, or religion, or a combination of all, your stories will reflect the ever-changing make-up of the world we live in, particularly in Los Angeles. The Citadel is the place to share your voices
