Special Programs

Child Development Training Consortium

You may qualify for participation in the Child Development Training Consortium if you meet both of these requirements:

  1. You are taking classes in Child Development or General Education with the goal of a Child Development Permit.
  2. You are currently working in a paid position in a program serving infants through kindergarten, or work with school-age children in a before or after-school program.

Please fill out the CDTC Participant Profile. Incomplete applications will not be considered for processing.

Part A. You, the student, fill out this section.
  1. Abbreviated city names are not accepted. Example: LA should be completely spelled out as "Los Angeles".
  2. Fill in all Career Information questions.
Part B. Your employer fills out this section. Please have them fill in each space answering all questions.
  1. Abbreviated county names are not accepted. Example: LA should be completely spelled out as "Los Angeles".
  2. Employing Agency Address should be complete and not abbreviated.
  3. Applications WILL NOT be accepted without a Facility License Number, or basis of license exemption.
  4. Be sure the Program Director or Family Childcare Provider prints their NAME and Title along with their signature in the spaces provided.
Part C. You, the student, fill out this section.
  1. Current Enrollment Information should include Course Title and Name of Instructor.
  2. If you are receiving Financial Aid, you must fill in the type of aid for your application to be considered complete.
  3. Be sure to sign your name and date in the space provided.

IMPORTANT! New requirement: For auditing purposes, we have been told by the State Child Development Training Consortium Coordinator that ORIGINAL Registration receipts and Book receipts must be submitted with the application to be considered for full or partial reimbursement.

CA Early Childhood Mentor Program

The California Early Childhood Mentor Program is a statewide effort to improve the quality of childcare. We provide training and support for early childhood professionals so that they, in turn, will be able to continue providing high-quality services. Through the Mentor Program, the Child Development Department at Los Angeles City College develops a selection process where mentor teachers and directors are identified and then certified. These early childhood teachers/directors provide mentoring to our Child Development students. On-going professional development, including monthly seminars, and stipends for mentoring and in-service training are an important benefit to the early childhood professionals who are a part of Los Angeles City College’s Mentor Program. Literacy Lab/Children’s Library

This literacy lab and children’s library was developed through a grant funded by the California Department of Education, Child Development Division (CDE-CDD). The written contents do not necessarily reflect the position or policy of the CDE-CDD.

Using the resources of the Children’s Library founded in 2001, students in Child Development can participate in a lab class to gain knowledge of high-quality children’s literature and authors as well as experience in developing pre-literacy and early learning skills for preschool children. The library contains 4000 children’s books, cd's, teacher resource books, parenting books, puppets, flannel stories and props to assist students in developing lesson plans and activities for classes and workplace sites. Students will have opportunities to create developmentally appropriate activities in language arts, creative arts, math and science, music, dramatic play and social studies under the supervision of a trained literacy professional.

Carmela Bosko serves as the children’s librarian and literacy lab instructor. She has a Master’s degree in Speech and Hearing Science with a minor in Psychology, is a licensed speech, language clinician and taught preschool for several years. She is highly enthusiastic about teaching children and adults how to love books and reading.
