Keynote Speakers for the 7th Annual LACCD Disability Summit 2021

Tom L. Thompson

Compliance & Inclusion for Higher Education, Disability Resources and Campus Accessibility

Colleges and universities have an obligation to ensure they provide an inclusive and equitable environment for students and employees with disabilities. In order for campuses to be equipped and responsive to student and employee requests for access, they must invest and advance the delivery of systems, procedures or guidelines, and resources. One way to view and understand the campus’s role, the role of the Disabled Students Program and Services (DSPS) and the role of an Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Coordinator in advancing accessibility, compliance and inclusion is to examine the Mission Statementtaken from the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS).

Araksya Arutyunyan, Psy.D.

Learning Disability Specialist

Dr. Araksya will provide an overview of what Learning Disabilities are in general, from a neurodiversity perspective, and what they look like on our campuses. She will make the case for why it’s important for everyone on our campuses to be familiar with LD and the assessment of it performed by LD Specialists. Statewide data will show the need for LD testing to serve students and stress the benefits of it to the student population facing learning challenges. Dr. Araksya will also recommend practical ways we can support students who struggle with Learning “Differences” focusing on Universal Design.
