An example of artwork by a member of The Collective

The Collective is an historic, Los Angeles Arts Organization, formally in existence from 1999 through 2006. The Collective is significant to the rich history of Los Angeles artists, arts organizations and arts activism, and specifically to the history of black artists and arts professionals working in the City and County of Los Angeles, and black-owned galleries and community spaces of that time. Founding member and artist, Michael Massenburg stated: “This organization was unique in that we formed a lifetime bond that went beyond the norm. We became a family. It shows in our continued relationships and expands into our art and community activism".

Panelists will include L.A. Collective Members: David G. Brown, graphic designer/illustrator and political cartoonist for the L.A. Sentinel; Mira Gandy, (via video conference) visual artist (painting/collage/video/installations) Amarpal Khanna, illustrator/designer, assistant professor of Animation/New Media, VAMA Department at L.A. City College; Michael Massenburg, mixed media/assemblage and public artist, founding member of the L.A. Collective; MonaLisa Whitaker, visual artist (photography and mixed media) and art administrator/curator Erika Hirugami, founder of CuratorLove, a global art practice.
