Prerequisite Information

What are Prerequisites?

Prerequisites are specific courses or levels of preparation that you must complete before you can enroll in a new course. In order to register for a course with prerequisites, you need to satisfy these requirements by successfully completing a course or in some cases taking an assessment test.

If you have satisfied the prerequisite by taking a course at LACC, it will automatically be cleared and you will be allowed to enroll in the new course. But, if you satisfy the requirement elsewhere, then you will need to request for prerequisite clearance.

Prerequisite Clearance:

Prerequisite clearance is not automatic for courses that you completed at another institution outside of LACC. You must submit a request to clear prerequisite to a counselor either in person or via this online counseling.

Prerequisite Clearance Subjects:

Please note that prerequisite clearance through the online counseling service is only available for those classes that require English, ESL, or Math courses as prerequisites. If the course you are trying to enroll in requires prerequisites other than the subjects mentioned above, you must meet with a counselor in person or visit the Academic Department to get an approval.

Courses Completed at Another College:

If you are using credits from another college to satisfy the prerequisites for a course, you will need to provide an official or unofficial transcript from your previous college with the following information:

  1. College/university name where the coursework was taken
  2. Your full name
  3. Term in which the coursework was taken
  4. Passing course grade (C or better)

Online Requests:

If you are unable to meet with a counselor in person, you may submit a request online by following the steps below:

  1. Submit the online counseling form and attach a document as needed with your request (e.g. transcript) using your LACCD student email account
  2. Check your LACCD email for our reply email as confirmation that we received your request (sent immediately)
  3. Your request will be reviewed within 10 business days (M-F, excluding weekends and holidays). During peak times (registration times), it may take longer than 10 business days and we suggest that you come in person if urgent. If you are missing information, a counselor will contact you to request more information, which can delay the process.

Office closed Friday, August 16 & Thursday, August 22 for staff development training.

Counseling services will be provided via express walk-in between August 12 - September 6.


To clear a prerequisite, bring an unofficial college transcript to the counseling department during walk-in hours.

To change a major and educational goal, you may bring the form to the counseling department during walk-in hours.
