Jerry and Carol Goldsmith Music Scholarship

Intended Purpose: For music majors with exceptional musical performance talent.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: $500. Winner performs on the Honor’s Program.

Criteria for Applying:

  • Must be a music major
  • Must demonstrate musical abilities at an audition before a panel of judges

Requirements: Applicants must have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Department activities.

David A. Alpert Scholarships

Intended Purpose: The David A. Alpert Scholarship was established to recognize and reward either incoming or current first semester music students with exceptional musical performance talent. The recipients of the scholarships shall be known as Alpert Scholars.

Semester Awarded: Once yearly

Amount Awarded: Up to $5,000. The number of winners will vary.

Criteria for Applying:

  • Either an incoming or a current first semester music major at LACC
  • Letter of recommendation from a current music teacher
  • Demonstration of musical abilities by an in-person audition before a panel of judges

Requirements:

  • A strong drive for achievement and evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Department of Music activities
  • If selected as the audition winner or runner-up, the student is known as the Alpert Scholar and must be enrolled as a full-time music major as defined by the Department of Music in the two semesters following the granting of the award.
  • Must maintain an overall GPA in all music subjects of not less than 3.0

Herb Alpert Music Scholarships for Incoming Music Students

Intended Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to incoming LACC Department of Music students who can demonstrate financial need. The scholarship will be granted based on need and talent

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: Up to $5,000. The number of winners will vary.

Criteria/Requirements for Applying:

  • Candidates must become full-time music majors in the LACC Department of Music and maintain a 3.2 GPA.
  • Candidates must demonstrate financial need:
    • Candidates must submit a one-page, typed essay describing their financial need, music education, music experiences, career goals, and what led them to choose music as their education.
    • Candidates must submit either the Expected Family Contribution Form from the FAFSA or the award letter from LACC’s Financial Aid Office.
  • Candidates must include a letter of recommendation from a qualified teacher.
  • Candidates must be graduating seniors in high school or transfers from another college/university.

Herb Alpert Music Scholarships for Continuing Music Majors

Intended Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to continuing LACC Department of Music students who can demonstrate financial need. The scholarship will be granted based on need and talent

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: Up to $5,000. The number of winners will vary.

Criteria/Requirements for Applying:

  • Candidates must be full-time music majors in the LACC Department of Music and maintain a 3.2 GPA.
  • Candidates must have studied a minimum of two semesters (one full academic year) with the LACC Department of Music.
  • Candidates must demonstrate financial need:
    • Candidates must submit a one-page, typed essay describing their financial need, music education, music experiences, career goals, and what led them to choose music as their education.
    • Candidates must submit either the Expected Family Contribution Form from the FAFSA or the award letter from LACC’s Financial Aid Office.
  • Candidates must include a letter of recommendation from a LACC professor of Music.
  • Candidates must be planning to transfer to a four-year university or conservatory.

Abe Robyn Guitar Scholarship

Intended Purpose: Established by Mr. Abe Robyn to recognize and reward outstanding efforts and accomplishments of LACC guitar students. It is intended that this scholarship be awarded to students whose primary emphasis is on the classical guitar, its technique, repertoire and promotion.

Semester Awarded: Once yearly

Amount Awarded: $100

Criteria for Applying:

  • Demonstration of outstanding development in technical and interpretive skills reflected in the student’s guitar performance
  • Completion of at least two semesters of guitar-related courses at LACC
  • Enrolled in a third guitar related course the time of the award
  • A minimum of 3.0 GPA in all guitar courses

Requirements:

  • Students must demonstrate outstanding progressive development in technical and interpretive skills reflected in their guitar performance.
  • If more than one student is recommended, an audition may be required.
  • Applicants must have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Department activities.
  • A student may receive this scholarship only once.
  • The award may be shared by two guitarists.

Elizabeth R. Mayer Memorial Scholarship

Intended Purpose: The Elizabeth R. Mayer Memorial Scholarship is to be awarded to a LACC student whose primary musical emphasis is either piano or chamber music instruments, and who exhibits a strong desire for achievement and gives evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Department of Music activities.

Semester Awarded: Spring

Amount Awarded: $150

Criteria for Applying:

  • Currently a Music Major at LACC at the time of the award
  • Enrollment in at least two of the following classes at the time of the award; Music 313, 314, 351, 361, 705, 725
  • At least one semester of part-time or full-time attendance at LACC prior to receiving the award
  • At least a 3.0 GPA

Requirements:

  • If a student has been exempted by the Music Chairman from the full requirements, the student must be taking at least 6 units of the requirements during the semester of the award.
  • The winner is selected by an auditions committee.

Dr. Glynn T. Settle Scholarship

Intended Purpose: The Dr. Glynn T. Settle Scholarship was established in 1990 as a memorial to Dr. Glynn T. Settle.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: $100

Criteria for Applying:

  • A Music Major at LACC at the time of the award
  • At least a 3.0 GPA in all units completed at LACC (If a student possesses extraordinary musical ability, the GPA may be reduced to 2.5)
  • Qualification for Campus Financial Aid
  • Completion of at least 12 course units at LACC

Requirements: The winner is selected by an auditions committee.

Jazz Band Scholarship

Intended Purpose: The LACC Jazz Band Scholarship was established to provide at least one $100 scholarship, but no more than two, each semester to an instrumental jazz student who needs financial help and who exhibits a strong desire for achievement.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: $100

Criteria for Applying:

  • Enrollment in at least one Jazz-related class
  • Enrollment in a minimum of 6 units in Music at the time of the award
  • At least one previous semester of part-time or full-time attendance at LACC prior to winning the award

Requirements:

  • The scholarship is awarded to a student who possesses a love for the particular instrument(s) and who works hard to improve his/her level of competence in Jazz. Although the essence of this award is dedication and effort, nothing in the above is intended to exclude full-time or academically proficient students.
  • A student may receive this award more than once. The winner is selected by a committee of full-time music faculty.

Leslie P. Clausen Scholarship

Intended Purpose: Created by a cash gift from Mr. & Mrs. Leslie P. Clausen on December 30, 1974 to reward needy students who possess superior musical talent and achievement.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: $300

Criteria for Applying:

  • A music major as defined by the Department of Music at LACC the semester of the award
  • At least one previous semester as a full-time student at LACC prior to winning the award
  • Enrollment in a music curriculum leading to an AA degree
  • Enrollment in an average of at least one General Education course per semester since the first semester (excluding P.E. and Health)
  • Must be a full-time LACC student the semester following the granting of the award
  • Demonstration of financial need
  • An excellent performer or composer
  • At least a 3.0 GPA in all subjects; at least a 3.2 GPA in all music subjects
  • A strong drive for achievement and evidence of cooperation, leadership, and contribution to Department of Music activities

Marion Suovanen Classical Guitar Scholarship

Intended Purpose: The Marion Suovanen Memorial Scholarship has been established by Mr. Elmer Suovanen to perpetuate his wife’s love of the classical guitar and to encourage, promote and recognize efforts and accomplishments of LACC classical guitar students.

Semester Awarded: Spring

Amount Awarded: Variable

Criteria for Applying:

  • Must have completed at least one semester of a classical guitar-related course at LACC
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA in all guitar courses
  • Enrolled in a second guitar-related course at the time of the award
  • If more than one student is recommended, an audition may be required.
  • A student may receive this scholarship only once.

Requirements:

  • This scholarship is awarded to students whose primary emphasis is on the classical guitar, it’s technique, repertoire, and promotion.
  • Applicants must demonstrate outstanding development in technical and interpretive skills reflected in their guitar performance.
  • Applicants must be highly motivated individuals.
  • The winner shall be selected by the LACC Music Scholarship Selection Committee.

Robert V. Altheuser Scholarship

Intended Purpose: The Robert V. Altheuser Scholarship was established to recognize and award a music student with outstanding efforts and accomplishments in the choral/vocal abilities in classical or commercial music.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: Variable

Criteria for Applying:

  • A full-time student as defined by the college
  • A music major as defined by the Department of Music at LACC the semester of the award
  • At least one semester of full-time residence at LACC prior to winning the award
  • Enrollment in a music curriculum leading to an AA degree
  • Enrollment in an average of one General Education course each semester
  • Enrollment in at least one choral ensemble and one voice class the semester of the award, maintaining an exemplary status in both courses
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or better with no grade less than "B" in any voice or choral class

Requirements: Selection by a panel of full-time music faculty

Robert E. Wilkinson Memorial Scholarship

Intended Purpose: This scholarship was created in memory of Robert E. Wilkinson (1925-2000), professor of music at LACC for over 38 years. Bob was also Dean of Student Activities, Dean of Academic Affairs, and a member of the Foundation Board of Directors.

Semester Awarded: Spring

Amount Awarded: Variable

Criteria for Applying:

  • B+ minimum GPA
  • Music major
  • Minimum of 8 semester units
  • Performer or composer

Requirements: Talent, proficiency level and potential shall be determined by an Audition Committee. The scholarship is awarded to a student who possesses a love for the particular instrument(s) and who works hard to improve his/her level of competence. The essence of this award is dedication and effort. Nothing in the above is intended to exclude full-time or academically proficient students.

William D. Kevany Scholarship

Intended Purpose: The William D. Kevany Scholarship was established to provide financial support to a LACC student whose primary musical emphasis is instrumental. It is the intention of this scholarship to reward that student who shall possess not only musical talent, but who also exhibits a strong desire for achievement.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: $150

Criteria for Applying:

  • Enrollment in at least one instrumental class at the time of the award
  • Enrollment in a minimum of 6 units in Music at the time of the award
  • At least one previous semester of part-time or full-time attendance at LACC prior to receiving the award

Alice Sutton Scholarship

Intended Purpose: Established by Ms. Clare Bronsen to recognize and reward outstanding efforts and accomplishments of LACC piano and organ students. It is intended that this scholarship be awarded to students whose primary emphasis is on piano and organ, their technique, repertoire and promotion.

Semester Awarded: Once yearly

Amount Awarded: $100

Criteria for Applying:

  • Piano or organ student
  • Music major
  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Completed at least 12 course units at LACC

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Department of Music activities.
  • A student may receive this scholarship only once.

Joseph Dyer Performing and Visual Arts Scholarship

Intended Purpose: This scholarship is granted to Los Angeles City College students as acknowledgement of excellence, for humanitarian reasons, for handicapped persons, etc. It is intended to support deserving, talented students who are studying performing and visual arts.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: $150

Criteria/Requirements for Applying:

  • Have completed a minimum of 24 units at LACC
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA in all units completed at LACC
  • Be currently enrolled in a minimum of 9 units at LACC

Book Awards

Intended Purpose: This award is intended to help students buy books and supplies in the LACC Bookstore. This award can be used in the Fall or Spring semester following the award.

Criteria for Applying:

  • Must be a music major
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units at the time of application
  • Must have a GPA of 2.0 or better
  • Must enroll as a music major in the Fall or Spring semester following the award
  • A student may receive this award more than once

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership, and contribution to Department activities.

Abbott Award

Intended Purpose: For music majors specializing in voice.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: $250

Criteria for Applying:

  • Must be a music major specializing in voice
  • Must have completed Music 400
  • Must be taking a voice class at the time of application

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Department activities.

Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards

Intended Purpose: This award recognizes music majors who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement.

  • Be a music major as defined by the Department of Music, enrolled in Harmony, Musicianship, Keyboard Harmony, Piano, Current Musical Events, and a Performing Organization (unless exempted by the department chair)

  • Have completed 10 or more units with a 3.2 GPA or higher in each of the two immediate past semesters

Honors Audition Award

Intended Purpose: The Honors Audition Award recognizes students who perform on our Music Honors Program. The student is auditioned in front of the full-time faculty, who make their decisions based upon musicianship, technique, stage presence and memorization.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: $50.00

Criteria for Applying:

  • Must be a music major as defined by the Department of Music
  • Must be currently enrolled in a performing ensemble at LACC
  • Must have completed at least one semester as a Music Major at LACC
  • Must carry a minimum of 10 units and have a 2.0 average or better in all subjects during the present semester

Requirements:

  • A strong drive for achievement and evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Department of Music activities
  • Demonstrate great talent and potential

Paul Park Young Musicians Scholarship Award

Intended Purpose: This award was established in honor of Paul Park and recognizes piano or chamber music students.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Criteria for Applying:

  • Be a music major as defined by the Department of Music, either incoming or first semester
  • Be or plan to be a full-time student with 12 or more units
  • Be or plan to be enrolled in a Music curriculum leading to an AA degree
  • Be or plan to be enrolled in Piano, Piano Ensemble, or Chamber Music
  • Have a GPA in all subjects of not less than 3.0

Requirements:

  • Have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership, and contribution to Department of Music activities
  • Demonstrate talent, proficiency and potential

Paul Park Chamber Music Award

Intended Purpose: This award was established in honor of Paul Park and recognizes chamber music students.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: Varies

Criteria for Applying:

  • Be a music major as defined by the Department of Music
  • Be a full-time student with 12 or more units
  • Have had at least two previous semesters of Chamber Music at LACC
  • Be enrolled in a Music curriculum leading to an AA degree with an average of at least one General Education course completed per semester (excluding P.E., Health and E.S.L.) since the first semester attending LACC
  • Be enrolled in Chamber Music at the time of the award, maintaining an exemplary status in the course
  • Have a GPA in all subjects of not less than 3.0

Requirements:

  • Have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership, and contribution to Department of Music activities
  • Demonstrate talent, proficiency and potential

Paul Park Most Improved Pianist Award

Intended Purpose: This award was established in honor of Paul Park and recognizes upper level piano students.

Semester Awarded: Twice yearly

Amount Awarded: Varies

Criteria for Applying:

  • Be a music major as defined by the Department of Music
  • Be a full-time student with 12 or more units
  • Be enrolled in a Music curriculum leading to an AA degree
  • Be enrolled in an UPPER LEVEL piano class (Piano III, Piano IV or Intermediate Piano) at the time of the award, maintaining an exemplary status in the course
  • Have a GPA in all subjects of not less than 3.0
  • Requirements:

  • Have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership, and contribution to Department of Music activities
  • Demonstrate talent, proficiency and potential

Lenore Saunders Music Scholarship

Intended Purpose: This award was established in honor of Lenore Saunders and recognizes upper level music students.

Amount Awarded: Varies

Criteria for Applying:

  • Be a music major as defined by the Department of Music
  • Be a full-time student with 12 or more units
  • Be enrolled in a Music curriculum leading to an AA degree
  • Be enrolled in an UPPER LEVEL instrumental class at the time of the award, maintaining an exemplary status in the course
  • Have a GPA in all subjects of not less than 3.0

Requirements:

  • Have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership, and contribution to Department of Music activities
  • Demonstrate talent, proficiency and potential
