News and Events for the week of June 24

Good Monday Morning:

As we end this fiscal year, we will balance our budget for the second year in a row. While our enrollment is down from last year by about 1%, we consider that a success because the decline was not as severe as past years. Our Outreach & Recruitment team, headed by our Outreach Coordinator Brenda Brown, is poised to bring in many more students form our local high schools and community centers. The Welcome Center has been redesigned to better accommodate the flow of students. The classified staff had a very productive retreat about a week ago. We look forward to a new academic year that marks 90 years of LACC, with renewed engagement with our students, our staff, and our community.

Summer Classes

We are in our third week of Summer Session. Our enrollment is at 100% of last year. Great job everyone! We still have space in our second summer session. Check out our website for a complete list of open classes for the second summer session. If any students need help, please send them to the newly renovated Welcome Center located on the first floor of the Student Services building.

Fall Classes

Enrollment is in full swing for fall 2019 classes. Our enrollment is up by 5%. Wonderful work! We continue to work hard to help our students find programs and classes to meet their goals. If students have any questions, please have them go to the Welcome Center on the first floor of the Student Services building.

Advertising and Marketing Update

We have an advertising and marketing campaign that you will begin to see later this week that will continue early into Fall. The new campaign is: “We… this City. For example, “We entertain this City.” You will see new ads in bus shelters, train stations and Metro cars, and billboard. The campaign started with the arts, but will continue throughout the summer for all areas. Additionally, we are placing ads in local newspapers for Fall enrollment.

Banners Across Vermont

A big part of our marketing and branding campaign, including the 90th anniversary, will be seen by the end of next week. We will have an installation of over 20 large banners on the front of the college building on Vermont – stretching from the Herb Alpert Music Center to the end of Franklin Hall. Each banner represents a separate program and is meant to establish the brand of LACC. It should be an incredible sight.

Pop-up Food Pantry (On Monday and Thursday)

Please be sure your students know that our Pop-up Food Pantry, located in front of the Student Union, continues to distribute between approximately 10:30am until 12:30pm.

Community Resource Fair 90th Anniversary Community Event

Please also mark your calendars for our Community Resource Fair on Saturday, October 12 from 10am to 2pm throughout the LACC campus. There will be free health screenings, activities for the entire family, information on employment opportunities, non-profit and community services and presentations about LACC programs and classes.

For Faculty & Staff - LACC Picnic 90th Anniversary Staff Event

The LACC family picnic is back. It will be on Thursday, Thursday, August 8 from 12noon to 4pm at Crystal Springs in Griffith Park. The picnic is free and you are welcome to bring your family. Although we could not get In-and-Out, Pink’s Hot Dogs will be there and we will have another alternative for food. We will have games, prizes, and a whole lot of fun for both you and your children. Please be sure to RSVP to the invitation that is being sent out shortly so we have an accurate count for food and activities.

As our 2018-19 fiscal year comes to a close, I can only think of this remarkable year we have had. Even with our challenges, this great college, LACC, perseveres as … the City’s College.

Have a great week,

Mary Gallagher
