News and Events for the week of July 22

Good Monday Morning:

As we begin week two of 2019 Summer Session II, note that Fall semester begins in just over a month. Fall enrollment is up slightly over this time last year (at 101%). Let’s keep working to make our enrollment strong.

Fall Classes

Enrollment is in full swing for Fall 2019 classes. Please encourage students attending summer sessions to enroll for Fall. If students have any questions, refer them to the Welcome Center on the first floor of the Student Services building.

LACC In the News

LACC received mentions in The Los Angeles Times, Inside Edition, and Discover Los Angeles. You can explore top news lines of our coverage in The LACC Press Room.

Banners Across Vermont

Don’t forget to check out the banner installation on the front of the college buildings along Vermont Avenue, stretching from the Herb Alpert Music Center to the end of Franklin Hall, as we continue celebrating LACC’s 90 years of education excellence.

Food For Thought Pop-up Food Pantry (Every Monday and Thursday)

Please be sure your students know that our Pop-up Food Pantry, located in front of the Student Union, continues to distribute food from approximately 10:00 am until 2:30 pm every Monday and Thursday. Summer Session II Food for Thought Finals Meals runs Monday, August 19 through Thursday, August 22, beginning at 9:00 am and continuing until all meals have been distributed. Meals are available in the Student Life Building, 1st Floor. Let students know that information on Food For Thought services can be found @lacitycollege on Instagram. We use #lacccares to promote both the Pop Up Pantry and the Midterm/Final Meals.

Community Resource Fair 90th Anniversary Community Event

Mark your calendars for the LACC Community Resource Fair on Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 10am to 2pm. There will be free health screenings, activities for the entire family, information on employment opportunities, non-profit and community services, and presentations about LACC programs and classes. LACC will be providing lunch and K-Earth 101 will be on campus providing music.

For Faculty & Staff - LACC Picnic 90th Anniversary Staff Event

I will be sending the invitation to “LACC All” inviting you and your family to our picnic on Thursday, August 8, from noon to 4pm at Crystal Springs in Griffith Park. Please RSVP to the invitation so we have an accurate count. The picnic is free. We will have Pink’s Hot Dogs, Patty’s Hamburgers (a local small vendor), games, prizes, and a whole lot of fun for you and your family. Activities are planned for children. You must RSVP to the invitation by Friday, August 1, in order to participate. We hope to see you there for an afternoon of fun!

For Faculty & Staff - Help with Beat the Rush Week

We need all hands on deck for our upcoming Beat the Rush Week, which will take place August 12 through 24. For volunteer opportunities, please contact Armineh Dereghishian at We will also be having daily update meetings the first week of Fall semester to address any issues and keep everyone up to date on happenings around campus.

For Faculty & Staff - Classified Retreats

On Friday, July 19, the classified staff had another productive day-long retreat. These retreats provide a forum to discuss proposals to improve processes, assist with decisions to improve departments, and allow us to invest time in staff that work directly with students.

LACC Community Corner

Last week I attended a meeting that the Irvine Foundation arranged for community colleges in Los Angeles teaching film and television classes with industry representatives. The discussion revolved around partnering to increase the number of men and women of color to obtain entry level “below the line” jobs (those jobs that are behind the scenes that assist the on scene staff). I look forward to continuing these discussions.

I also met with the USC Occupational Therapy program director and one of the interns who has been on campus last year. They are proposing a program to pipeline students into their occupational therapy program. They also would like to have continued services offered by their interns.

Have a great week,

Mary Gallagher
