News and Events for the week of August 23

Good Monday Morning,

The filming on Heliotrope is not with LACC. I asked the security people by Lot 4 how long they are going to be filming and they said at least until Thursday. So, everyone will need to either come up Edgemont to the first street and turn right and then go into Lot 4 or take Vermont to Willow Brook and then left to Heliotrope. There is not much we can do about it because they have a permit to do this. Hopefully, they will be finished on Thursday.

Return to campus

This will be a very busy week ahead for all of us as we prepare for some students back on campus in a week for the Fall 2021 term. Thank you to all of you who volunteered to make calls last week to the students who had not yet registered. We saw an increase in our enrollment the last time we made calls a couple of weeks ago. And the students appreciate hearing from us, and checking in.

Fall Semester

Our enrollment for fall is 92% of Fall 2019 and that is a job well done! Our headcount is at 91% of Fall 2019, and that means that, not only are our students engaged, but, they are taking more classes than they did in Fall 2019. We remain at the top in the District in enrollment. The deans and department chairs have been reviewing low enrolled on-campus classes to determine if those classes should be moved to remote instead of on campus. Yes, we have a busy week ahead.

All Hands on Deck for Fall

I asked for “all hands on deck” for the next three weeks. It is Beat the Rush Week this week, Monday, August 23, and Welcome Week next week beginning Monday, August 30. Extended hours in Student Services offices will be Monday through Thursday, 8am to 7pm, Friday 8am to 4:30pm and Saturdays August 28, September 4, and September 11 from 9am to 1pm. Classified staff will be working diligently to serve our students and prospective students coming to campus and online. Please remind your students that they can enroll for fall classes now.

Town Hall

Mark your calendars for a Town Hall Tuesday, August 31 at 1:00pm for faculty and staff; and Tuesday, August 31 at 2:00pm for students. I plan to have Town Hall updates at least once a month to keep you informed of any changes happening regarding the pandemic, the recovery, and what the year ahead looks like for us. I want to make sure I am available to you for the information I have to convey and to take your questions.

LACC “Fresh Success” Program

We have fully launched the new student “Fresh Success” program last week. Once we sent the flyer out, we started getting responses from students right away. This is great. We want to provide assistance to as many students as possible while we have additional resources from the federal government HEERF III funds. The program provides multiple services for students: food, textbooks, transportation, devices, Wi-Fi, emergency funds, employment, housing referrals, tutoring, and mental health. It includes all services that a student would need to be successful at LACC. Applications can be obtained at:

Let’s get our students the help they need as soon as possible.

Student Aid Disbursements

We will be distributing the direct aid to students from HEERF III on their debit card at two points in the fall and spring terms: three weeks into the full semester, and the second week after the late start classes. All California Promise students (formerly BOG fee waiver) will receive a distribution on their debit card. Please encourage our students to get their books ahead of the semester beginning. They can apply for textbook assistance using the link to the Fresh Success program above. This application is for anything a student needs assistance with during their term.

Intercoms Have Been Installed

Intercoms have been installed on the first and second floors of the Student Services building, and we are waiting for the remainder of the order from the vendor to complete the entire building this week.

Check in Daily

Please remember to check in daily through the LACC SAFE check in app when you come to campus. We do receive weekly reports of those who signed in, so please make sure you do your daily check-in when you are on campus.

he LACC Dream Resource Center

The LACC Dream Resource Center provides a variety of support and resources to AB540, DACA and all undocumented students. Their Cranium Chat Lobby Hours are Monday – Wednesday, 9am to 5pm; Thursday 9am to 2pm and Friday 9am to 1pm. To book a counseling appointment, contact
