News and Events for the week of August 2

Good Monday Morning,

As we begin August, we also start our campus re-engagement. Our Central Plant is up and running and providing cool air throughout campus. I look forward to seeing everyone on campus throughout the week.

Vaccination Updates

At the Board of Trustees meeting this Wednesday, August 4, the Board will vote on mandating vaccinations or negative COVID test for all faculty and students who access the physical campus. I am scheduling a Faculty and Staff Town Hall on Thursday, August 5 at 1pm. I hope to see you there.

Last Week’s Town Hall

Thank you to everyone who attended last week’s Town Hall. My apologies that I forgot to send out the recap of last Wednesday’s Town Hall. I will send it out to all of you this morning.

Fall Classes Still Available

Please remind your students that they can enroll for fall classes now. A special registration fair will be held at all nine LACCD colleges on Saturday, August 7 from 9am to 1pm. The Child Development Center will be accepting applications for children two to five years of age. Our campus will be offering food from The Habit, music, and prizes. An email was sent out if you would like to work at the event.

Visitin Campus - LACC SAFE App

Please remember to check in daily through the LACC SAFE check in app when you come to campus. As the Delta virus numbers climb in Los Angeles, face masks must now be worn by all persons indoors, regardless of vaccination status, throughout Los Angeles and some other surrounding counties, including Los Angeles City College.

LACC Dream Resource Center Orientations

The LACC Dream Resource Center is hosting UndocuWelcome Orientations in English and Spanish to let students know about the Center’s services. The Center provides a variety of support and resources to AB540, DACA and all undocumented students. The next orientation date is Thursday, August 12 from 2 to 3:30pm, bit.ly/DRC-UWO-3. Their Cranium Chat Lobby Hours are Monday – Wednesday, 9am to 5pm; Thursday 9am to 2pm and Friday 9am to 1pm. To book a counseling appointment, contact lacc-dream@laccd.edu.

The LACC Fresh Success Program

The full launch of our new Fresh Success program is underway. The target number of students is 500 for this new program that provides full wrap around services, such as food, an emergency fund for students, books, transportation, temporary housing assistance, tutoring, mentoring, and employment. We should easily meet this target in Fall 2021. We have identified 1,400 students who we know qualify, and we are working with Institutional Effectiveness to identify additional students who qualify for this support. We are anxious to fully implement this program because, from data we have analyzed with the Pop-up Food Pantry, we know it makes a difference in students succeeding to have these services available. Our goal is to have every student who is eligible in this program to help them reach their goal. Stay tuned for more information on this.

LA Care Community Events

LA Care will be hosting back-to-school walk-up/drive up community events at their community resource centers. All families with school-aged children are welcome and don't need to have LA Care insurance to participate. Backpacks are free and come with school supplies while supplies last.  All events are 9am to noon. Upcoming dates and locationsinclude:

  • Metro L.A., Friday August 6, 4100 Marathon Street, LA, CA 90029, Lot 1

Student Assistance

As we move further into summer toward fall, engagement with our students is paramount. If your students need any assistance, we still have our hotline for students: hotline-students@lacitycollege.edu

BELIEVE. ACHIEVE. SUCCEED. Let’s help our students meet their program goal.

Stay well. Get vaccinated.
