LACC Announces New Cybersecurity Program Offering Certificate and Degree

Originally Published: 2/3/2020

The new program consists of 10 classes designed to provide students with cybersecurity knowledge in order to earn a Certificate of Achievement in Cybersecurity. An Associate in Science Degree in Cybersecurity is also available. Students will gain the knowledge to begin a career in cybersecurity in three quick semesters. Only basic computer skills are required.

As cyber threats continue to grow, the need for certified IT security professionals remains in high demand. Currently, there are roughly half a million cybersecurity-related job openings in the United States with a projected need for 1.8 million additional cybersecurity professionals to fill the workforce gap by 2022.

LACC offers students a built-in-certification-as-you-go cybersecurity program. Upon completion of the program’s individual courses, students will be prepared to take CompTIA certification exams. These are professional industry certifications which are recognized around the world. Courses within the new program include Cybersecurity Concepts, Network Architecture Principles, Applications and Systems, Computer Forensics, and Beginning Programming including Linux and Python.

“Companies need employees with the knowledge to protect corporate and customer data while simultaneously preventing data breaches. LACC’s new Cybersecurity Program allows students to obtain an array of cybersecurity knowledge at a nominal price, enabling them to secure employment in the fast-growing cybersecurity field. With our new program, students learn by doing – not just by reading about it,” said Allan Pratt, Adjunct Professor, Computer Technology and Electronics, Los Angeles City College.

Graduates of the program will be able to solve difficult problems across a range of cyber disciplines, understand and protect systems and networks against internal and external threats, and once employed, fill a much-needed void in corporate technology departments.

“LACC is committed to providing innovative programs at an affordable cost,” said Dr. Mary Gallagher, President, Los Angeles City College. “Our new Cybersecurity Program will provide graduates with the skills to succeed in this critical sector of technology.”
