News and Events for the week of October 8

Good Monday Morning:

A little rain last week reminds us that summer is over and we are well into our fall semester. We are all a buzz with students, faculty and staff working to have a successful fall term. As I watched the end of a 60 Minutes segment last night, author of The Fault in Our Stars, shared this as he ended his interview: DFTBA – Don’t Forget To Be Awesome. I loved it!

And we have a busy week ahead.

New Student-Centered Funding Formula

I am inviting all who wish to attend a presentation given by Vice Chancellor Dr. Ryan Corner on the new Student-Centered Funding Formula. The presentation will take place this Tuesday, October 9  in the Student Union’s multi-purpose room on the 3rd floor from 12:45pm to 2pm. I encourage you to attend, so I am allowing offices where all employees want to attend to close between 12:30pm and 2:15pm. Be sure to put a note up about any office closure.

LACC Pop-up Food Bank

Every Monday, our new pop-up food bank opens to students. Registered LACC students in need can pick up fruits, vegetables, drinks, dry goods and snacks in front of the student union from 11am until all the food is gone. If you would like to help donate to this worthy cause, you can visit https://donate.laccfoundation.org/food-for-thought. Last week, our food bank was featured on Telemundo, NBC-TV and KABC radio news programs. Watch the Telemundo coverage at http://my.tvey.es/q5Y8C

LA LGBT Center Housing Navigator

The multicultural center is hosting a meeting today, Monday October 8, for students to meet with the LA LGBT housing representative in AD 108 at 12noon, to find out about resources and assistance to students in need of housing. Please email multicultural@lacitycollege.edu for more information.

Student Workshop: Are You Stressed Out and Overwhelmed?

In an effort to have resources continually available to students to navigate the challenges of transitioning to college, this Tuesday, October 9, the Life Skills Center/Health and Wellness will host a student workshop on how to deal with anxiety and stress. The workshop will be presented in the Student Union Cub Room at 12:30pm. For more information, contact Joe Exnowski at exnowsjj@lacitycollege.edu

Intramural Flag Football

Intramurals are back! On Tuesday, October 9, Intramural Sports will host intramural flag football on the LACC soccer field, with purple versus orange at 1pm; and green versus white at 2pm. Don’t forget to wear your team’s t-shirt. To learn more about both our intramural flag football and the intramural soccer league, contact the Office of Student Life.

Oleanna Performance and Discussion

On Wednesday, October 10, all LACC faculty, staff and administrators are invited to a performance of Act Two of David Mamet’s drama Oleanna, with a discussion to follow at the Camino Theatre beginning at 12:45 pm.

Pathway to Law School: Law School Recruiters Visit Campus

That is right. If you have been considering law school to possibly pursue a career as an attorney, on Wednesday, October 10, recruiters from the USC Gould School of Law and Loyola Marymount School of Law will be here to talk with students about law school and answer questions. The event will take place from 6pm to 7pm in Holmes Hall 7.

Flu Shots for Students

It is important for all of us to go into this upcoming flu season with the best possible opportunity to avoid getting the flu. All LACC students can receive a flu shot at the discounted rate of $25. To receive a flu shot, students need to bring their student ID card and bring proof of paid health fees. Flu shots will be given in the Health and Wellness Center, Room 120, in the Student Services Building.

Library Hours Extended for Mid-Terms

The library hours will be extended beginning Wednesday, October 10 through Saturday, October 20. On Mondays through Thursdays during these dates, the Library will be open from 7:30am until 11pm; on Fridays from 7:30am to 4pm; Saturdays and Sunday (October 14)  from 10am to 4pm.

Other Upcoming Events – Mark Your Calendars
  • Friday, October 26th at 1:00pm – We will be providing training on Title IX. All classified staff will be reassigned to attend and any faculty interested can attend as well.
  • Friday, December 14th at 4:00pm – Our holiday party will be held in the Student Union 3rd floor. We are going to dress it up and make it beautiful. We will have a nice buffet dinner and dancing. This will be for adults only and we will be charging a nominal amount to be decided very soon for you and a guest.

My thanks to all of you who are helping our students to succeed at our amazing LA City College… The City’s College.

Have a great week,
