News and Events for the week of October 1

Good Monday Morning:

It is so hard for me to believe that it is already October 1st. It is definitely autumn. The weather is still so nice, but getting cooler. We have late start classes beginning in a couple of weeks. Many of those classes are already full so we will be adding a few more classes.

College Council Meeting Today at 12:45 in the Foundation Conference Room

Today the College Council meets at 12:45 in the Foundation Conference Room. Join us for college updates and discussions on items affecting us all.

Ralph Bunche Scholars Program Meet and Greet on Tuesday

I am proud that we have added more students to our Ralph Bunche Scholars program this year. Their first event is a meet and greet on Tuesday afternoon in the Student Union second floor conference room. Hope to see you there.

Mayor Garcetti’s Visit

Last Monday, Mayor Eric Garcetti visited LACC to speak to students about the importance of voting and to help register students to vote. Participating students were also invited to a Democratic fundraising event last Tuesday night where Mayor Garcetti brought our students to the stage in recognition of their efforts. Meeting with LACCD Executive Committee for the District Budget Committee (ECDBC)

Last Tuesday the Sr. Staff and I met with the Executive Committee for the District Budget Committee (ECDBC) to review how we were able to balance our budget last year. We also outlined our plan for balancing our budget this year and going forward. We asked the ECDBC to consider forgiving the debt that had carried over from 2008-09. We are not sure whether they will do this. But we are hopeful that at least they will discuss it. We will keep you posted.

Faculty Mentor Program Kicked Off

I was able to greet both the faculty and students on Friday who are part of our official faculty mentor program. Both parties were happy to get it going. There was a lot of great energy in the Student Union on Friday.

Flu Shots for Students

All LACC students can receive a flu shot at the discounted rate of $25. To receive a flu shot, students need to bring their student ID card and bring proof of paid health fees. Flu shots will be given in the Health and Wellness Center, Room 120, in the Student Services Building.

LACC Pop-up Food Bank

Every Monday, our new pop-up food bank opens to students. Registered LACC students in need can pick up fruits, vegetables, drinks, dry goods and snacks in front of the student union from 11am until all the food is gone. Artist Lecture: Phung Huynh

On Tuesday, October 2, LACC’s Visual & Media Arts department will present the tenth installment of their Artist Lecture Series featuring artist Phung Huynh from 6pm to 7:30pm in Chem 3 (Basement Lecture Hall).

Adult Coed Flag Football

LACC is partnering with LA SportsNet to bring Intramural Sports to our students. This fall, we will be hosting Adult Coed Flag Football on Tuesdays and Fridays on campus. To learn more about our flag football and intramural soccer league, contact the Office of Student Life.

California Rideshare Week

This week is California Rideshare Week when thousands of Southern Californians make the pledge to find alternatives to driving alone to work. Learn about alternative forms of transportation at our rideshare event on Wednesday, October 3 at 10 am in the main quad and at www.ridematch.info.

LACC Theatre Academy Presents AutoPLAY

Our Theatre Academy is continuing its presentation of “AutoPLAY 2018” through Saturday, October 6. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors and veterans. To purchase tickets and for more information, go to theatreacademy.lacitycollege.edu. I hear it is really good. I will be seeing it on Friday.

LACCD Board of Trustees Ad Hoc Committee on Information Technology

This Wednesday, October 3, East Los Angeles College will be hosting a special meeting of the Board of Trustees ad hoc committee on Information Technology at 5pm. All students, faculty and staff from all LACCD colleges are invited to share comments on our Information Technology systems.

Other Upcoming Events – Mark Your Calendars
  • Tuesday, October 9 at 12:45pm – Vice Chancellor Cornner will be coming to campus to present the new Student–Centered Funding Formula. Everyone is invited and we will hold it in the Multipurpose Room of the student Union. This is a great opportunity to see the new funding formula and ask questions.
  • Friday, October 26th at 1:00pm – We will be providing training on Title IX. All classified staff are invited to attend and any faculty interested can attend as well.
  • Friday, December 14th at 4:00pm – Our holiday party will be held in the Student Union 3rd floor. We are going to dress it up and make it beautiful. We will have a nice buffet dinner and dancing. This will be for adults only and we will be charging a nominal amount to be decided very soon for you and a guest.

As the weather begins it change toward winter, let’s work with our students to help them have an amazing experience at our great LACC…The City’s College.
