News and Events for the week of February 4

Good Monday Morning:

Today we begin our Spring semester. Our enrollment numbers are at approximately 95% of last spring. We still have classes open! If you need assistance, please visit the Welcome Center located on the first floor of the Student Services building.

Visit to State Legislators

Last Monday I spent all day, along with a dozen other LACCD colleagues, visiting over 40 members of our state legislators. These meeting were one-on-one in an effort to inform our representatives of the initiatives needed for our colleges and our students to be successful. This was my first visit and I really enjoyed talking about LACC and our students. Our new Governor has proposed a good budget for community colleges for next year.

The District is working on a new budget allocation model for the colleges. I was just appointed to serve on the Executive Committee of the District Budget Committee so that I will be very involved in the evolution and final version of the LACCD Budget Allocation Model. Stay tuned!

Faculty FLEX Day

It was great to see all of you last Friday at the Spring Faculty Symposium. It was great to talk with you again a year after my first speech to the faculty and staff last February. The focus on equity was great and I understand the breakout sessions were really good.

Welcome Week

Welcome Week begins today and our Welcome Carnival will be held today, tomorrow and Wednesday (2/4 – 2/6) in the Student Union, first floor (due to rain)  and will feature breakfast (donuts and coffee) from 8am to 9am; and pizza, sandwiches, papusas and popcorn for lunch from 12noon to 1pm. We are planning to have booths set up to provide information on financial aid, counseling, EOPS/TRIO/CalWORKS and other campus programs; and we are also planning musical chairs, face painting, carnival games and a donut eating contest. Please join us in activities.

The Student Services building will be extending their hours of operation this Saturday (2/9). The bookstore will also be open this Saturday as well.

Please let everyone know to go to the Student Services building Welcome Center for any questions they need answered.

Pop-Up Food Bank for Students is Back

Our Pop-Up Food Bank is adding a day – now we will provide free food to students every Monday and Thursday from about 11am until 1pm (or until the food runs out). Students can get fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as some other pre-packaged food items.

At the end of this letter, I have a detailed listing of services available to help our students. I hope this helps you spread the word to our students who need extra assistance.

Theatre Academy Auditions

This Wednesday, February 6, our Theatre Academy will hold auditions for enrollment for the Spring semester. Auditions will be held in the Camino Theatre at 4 pm.

Artist Speaker Series

Please mark your calendar for our first Artist Speaker Series featuring Elizabeth Preger and Eugene Ahn next week, Tuesday, February 12 in Chem 3 from 6pm to 7:30pm.

LACC’s 90th Anniversary Gala

Please mark your calendars for March 12 when we will be holding our 2019 LACC Gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Herb Alpert and Lani Hall will be performing. The festivities begin at 6pm. Tickets for faculty, emeriti and staff are $225. For all others tickets are $450.

As you begin your new classes today, help our students to know and understand what a truly special place they chose – LACC…The City’s College.

Have a great week!
