News and Events for the week of August 12

Good Monday Morning:

Within a couple of weeks, LACC will once again be busy with new and returning students starting another academic year. It’s a time to reflect on our recent activities, which included a classified staff retreat, our annual picnic at Griffith Park, and we hosted a special training on persistence delivered by a team from the U.S. Department of Education. As look forward to our remaining 90th Anniversary schedule of activities, let’s keep this momentum going.

New Look in Student Services Building

To help our students get to the right office for the Student Services building, we have installed color-coded pathways on the floors. These lead students right to where they need to go. Stop in and take a look.

Beat the Rush is Here!

Today begins two weeks of Beat the Rush and Beat the Lines!

Extended hours in all Student Services Offices are Monday – Thursday, 8am to 6:30pm, Friday 8am to 4pm, and on Saturdays beginning August 24, August 31, and September 7, from 9am to 1pm. Additional staff will be on hand at the Welcome Center, in Student Services, and assisting at ticket machines.

For volunteer opportunities, please contact Armineh Dereghishian at deregha@lacitycollege.edu. Let’s approach the Fall 2019 semester focused on students and committed to intellectual excellence and social responsibility.

Fall Semester Enrollment

Fall semester begins in just two weeks. Please encourage students attending summer session to enroll for fall. If students have any questions, refer them to the Welcome Center on the first floor of the Student Services building.

Enrollment and Budget Update

Our advertising, marketing, and outreach efforts are ongoing to ensure we have a good start for our fall term. As of today, our fall enrollment is up by 2% at 102%, and our headcount is at 99%.

The 2018-19 budget is ending with a positive balance.

Food for Thought Pop-up Food Pantry (Every Monday and Thursday)

Please be sure your students know that our Pop-up Food Pantry, located in front of the Student Union, continues to distribute food from approximately 10am until 2:30pm every Monday and Thursday. Summer Session II Food for Thought Finals Meals runs Monday, August 19 through Thursday, August 22, beginning at 9am and continuing until all meals have been distributed. Meals are available in the Student Union Building, 1st Floor. Let students know that information on Food for Thought services can be found @lacitycollege on Instagram. We use #lacccares to promote both the Pop Up Pantry and the Midterm/Final Meals.

Theatre Academy Auditions

On Wednesday, August 14, the LACC Theatre Academy will hold auditions for enrollment for the fall 2019 semester. Auditions will be held at noon in the LACC Camino Theater. Please contact Tony Maggio at maggioac@lacitycollege.edu for more information.

Community Resource Fair 90th Anniversary Community Event

Save the date for the LACC Community Resource Fair on Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be free health screenings, activities for the entire family, information on employment opportunities, non-profit and community services, and presentations about LACC programs and classes. LACC will be providing lunch and K-Earth 101 will be on campus providing music.

Faculty & Staff - ‚ÄčTech Expo Save the Date

Faculty and staff are invited to join Office Depot, Samsung, Aerohive, Dell, Promethean, and many more vendors as they highlight “Driving Student Success.” Learn about the latest trends in education technology, gain new insights, enjoy coffee, giveaways, and lunch. This event will be Wednesday, September 25, 2019 from 10 am to 2 pm in the Student Union 3rd Floor Multipurpose Room.

LACC Community Corner

Food and Housing Insecurity are big problems, ones that require leaders across sectors to unite and design groundbreaking solutions. Last week I had the opportunity to work with the United Way Director of Homeless Initiatives and our LACC Foundation to discuss opportunities for supporting our students. United Way helped us to secure funding to expand our Food for Thought Midterm/Final Meals Program and now we are discussing opportunities to assist students with retaining or obtaining housing.

Internships at Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Office

The Office of LA Mayor Eric Garcetti is seeking motivated students to join the Census 2020 Initiative Team as non-paid interns for fall 2019. Please let your students know that they can apply by sending a resume and cover letter to Ara An at ara.an@lacity.org.

Enjoy the next couple of weeks as we launch into the 2019-20 academic school year.

Have a great week,
Mary Gallagher
