News and Events for the week of August 5

This Week @ City

Good Monday Morning:

A lot is happening as we gear up to begin our fall semester on August 26, 2019. We will be finishing the second summer session in three weeks, holding our annual fall symposiums for classified staff and faculty, hosting our annual picnic, bringing our new faculty in to begin their faculty academy, holding retreats for department chairs and student services, and hosting a special training on persistence delivered by a team from the U.S. Department of Education.

Enrollment and Budget

Our enrollment for summer overall was even with last year’s summer sessions. Our second summer session was larger than our first summer session, so our enrollment for 2019-20 is starting off a little higher overall. Two weeks ago the fall headcount was down to 94% of last year; however, by the end of last week it was back up again to 98% of last year. Our enrollment in class sections for fall 2019 is up by 2% to 102% of last year. Our advertising, marketing, and outreach efforts are ongoing to ensure we have a good start for our fall term. The 2018-19 budget is ending with a positive balance, and I should be able to report the final number next Monday.

Thank you everyone for the great work in 2018-19. I am looking forward to an amazing year ahead -- LACC’s 90th year -- in 2019-20.

Fall Semester

The fall semester begins in just four weeks. Please encourage students attending summer sessions to enroll for fall. If students have any questions, refer them to the Welcome Center on the first floor of the Student Services building.

Summer Session II Food for Thought Finals Meals runs Monday, August 19 through Thursday, August 22, beginning at 9am and continuing until all meals have been distributed. Community Resource Fair 90th Anniversary Community Event

Mark your calendars for the LACC Community Resource Fair on Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be free health screenings, activities for the entire family, information on employment opportunities, non-profit and community services, and presentations about LACC programs and classes. LACC will be providing lunch and K-Earth 101 will be on campus providing music.

For Faculty & Staff - LACC Picnic 90th Anniversary Staff Event – This Thursday, August 8, 2019, 12 noon to 4 pm

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone at our 90th Anniversary Staff Picnic this Thursday, August 8, from 12 noon to 4 pm at Crystal Springs in Griffith Park. We have over 200 RSVPs. We will have Pink’s Hot Dogs, Patty’s Hamburgers, games, prizes, and a whole lot of fun for you and your family. We have over 50 children attending with their parents so we should have an afternoon of fun!

For Faculty & Staff - Help with Beat the Rush Week

We need all hands on deck for our upcoming Beat the Rush Week, which will take place August 12 through August 24. For volunteer opportunities, please contact Armineh Dereghishian at deregha@lacitycollege.edu.

For Faculty & Staff - Tech Expo Save the Date

Faculty and staff are invited to join Office Depot, Samsung, Aerohive, Dell, Promethean, and many more vendors as they highlight “Driving Student Success.” Learn about the latest trends in education technology, gain new insights, enjoy coffee, giveaways, and lunch. This event will be Wednesday, September 25, 2019 from 10 am to 2 pm in the Student Union 3rd Floor Multipurpose Room.

LACC Community Corner

On Tuesday I attended a meeting of an Ad Hoc Group from the Los Angeles Promise Zone (LAPZ) to work with partners from our local Opportunity Zone to help improve conditions in our area. This work includes building additional housing, adding additional industries, and building businesses. There is a great deal of interest from our partners in the LA Promise Zone to work with LACC to improve the economic health of our community through training and education.

Last Thursday I attended an ACCJC training to prepare as Chair for a team visit in October to a new college in Colton called California Preparatory College. I will have a team of eight faculty and administrators from around the state who will review the college and prepare a report for the ACCJC Commissioners to consider granting accreditation candidacy to “Cal Prep.”

Enjoy the next three weeks as we prepare for our fall semester to begin.

Have a great week,
