LACC’s Ralph Bunche Scholars (RBS) Program is Recruiting Students!

Over the last few years, the Ralph Bunche Scholars program (RBScholars) at Los Angeles City College has grown from 20 to 220. Our Scholars have successfully transferred to top-tier universities: UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and all other UCs; USC; all Cal States; Amherst; Stanford; MIT, to name but a few. Oftentimes, our students also receive important scholarships, such as the Jack Kent Cooke; Norman Topping at USC; Transfer Scholarship at UCLA. These awards reflect the high-caliber of our highly motivated Scholars.

We encourage all eligible students to apply! To participate in the RBScholars program, a student needs a 3.0 GPA and be eligible for English 101. Students interested in participating should not have too many units as they will need four or five honors classes (following IGETC) to certify in the program. To finish and certify in the program, a student must also turn in a major research essay and finish 30 hours of community service.

There are numerous advantages to participate in the program:

  • Our RBScholars Faculty is devoted to the success of our Scholars and works closely with them;
  • Scholars can participate in Honors Research Conferences;
  • Scholars can get a UCLA library card;
  • Scholars get together and enjoy meetings, outings, seminars;
  • Scholars receive leadership opportunities, meet other like-minded students, and many other advantages.

Finally, our program is named after the great Ralph Bunche, the first African American political scientist who received a Nobel Peace Prize (1950). Ralph Bunche was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Jefferson High School (Los Angeles), graduated summa cum laude from UCLA (when UCLA was our LACC campus!), and earned his Master and Doctoral degrees from Harvard University.

The LACC Scholars program is dedicated to him, whose excellent scholarship and positive influence in the world inspire all of us to strive toward our highest potential, no matter what obstacles we face.
